I've been wondering ever since I received my acceptance from Northeastern why I wasn't good enough for the Honors Program.

The stats from the website are (for the middle 50% of Honors Program freshmen):
GPA w : 4.0 - 4.3
SAT: 1380 - 1450
2050 - 2170

I have a 4.0 uw (4.32 w) and a 1460/2180 (superscored, otherwise its 1450/2150). My ECs are good and my recommendations are stellar. I've been scratching my head wondering what went wrong, then it hit me.

From the common app supplement:
" To which other universities have you applied? (For research purposes only; responses will in no way affect your admission decision.) "

Like an idiot, I answered honestly, and my answers probably made it clear that Northeastern wasn't exactly my #1 choice-- at the time I wrote the application.

I've noticed a lot of people on this board who seem to be a bit miffed by the fact that they were also not accepted into honors. I was wondering if there maybe is a pattern here. Did people who put lots of Ivies or Reach schools in these slots get ignored for honors?

Or prehaps I'm simply reading way to far into this, and turning into a conspiracy theorist. I just thought it might be an interesting discussion.

I have 3.69UW (4.53W), 1470 (2150) and wasn't accepted to neither Northeastern's School of Management nor their Honors program, but I was accepted into BC's Carroll School of Management and their Honors program.

I was also wondering if it had to do with the major you applied to. If the qualifications are the top 10% of the major who get into the honors program, or the top 10% of all applicants across the board? My feeling was maybe it would be harder to get into the honors program if you were in a more selective major, say physical therapy or pharmacy. Any thoughts?

^ I'm under the impression that it's the top 10% of the entire applicant pool.

Also keep in mind that getting into this school is getting drastically more difficult to get into every year. This was my safety when I applied (I'm currently a sophomore), but if I were to be applying this year, this would have been more of a match/reach. Even last year's averages are going to be outdated.

I honestly answered which other schools I applied to (the list included 2 Ivies and a few other "top" universities) and that didn't affect my acceptance into Honors.

I think it's not accurate to use last year's stats, especially since those are just the median stats. The top 10%, whether is for each major/college/or the entire 2012 applicant pool, went up.

Also, you really can't judge an applicant by SAT scores and GPA. There are so many other factors. Personally, my essays and recs were really strong.

I was accepted into Honors and I listed schools that are far higher up on the rankings than NEU. eg: tier 1 UC's, 2 ivies, Stanford, NYU, USC, BU

In at honors with 1430/2120 good e.c's three varsity sports, captain of 2, president of 3 clubs...2 aps (4's) and taking 5 as a senior

applied to: Columbia ED (ouch), Duke (double-ouch)
In at: Maryland Honors, PSU Main, Drexel honors, Hofstra Honors, Pitt Honors
Waiting on: Cornell, Tufts

idk thats kinda weird. i used to think NEU wasnt up to my level but looking at the increase in difficulty of acceptance I am considering it more and more. Not to sound like a snob.

Honestly i think that if i applied RD i don't think that i would have gotten into honors, just seeing the level of the applicants they turned down. I just don't get it.

I don't really get it either. I have a feeling this ties into Northeastern's scheme to make the school better, but I don't know how exactly. If you apply to Northeastern with really good stats and don't get in, it could be because Northeastern knows you won't go there and it will lower the acceptance rate. Think about it, if 10,000 people apply to Northeastern as a safety and NEU can reject most of them, the acceptance rate will go down (which makes it look like the school is hard to get into). However the fact that you all got in but not into honors is sort of hurting the school. OR if they see that people with really good stats are applying to Northeastern and decide to go, but don't get into the honors program, it will raise the average stats for the rest of the university.

Again, I think this is all part of Northeastern's attempt to rise in the ranks.

I think some of you guys are reading way too much into this.

NEU isn't the fall-back school it once was and it's done a lot to try and shake that rep...including the creation of the Honors program. I doubt they have a such an elaborate scheme or are out to get us! :P

lozz, that's super weird. i'm in honors at northeastern. SAT: 1360/2010. Rank in top 5 pct. But my ECs are huge, my letters of rec were huge, and my math background helped, i'd bet.

Plus, i'm from Denver. Which is apparently cool to those east-coast folks. I cannot wait to tell crappy stories about my life to people who will be too dang into them.

Oh, emily, i have about a million questions i think i want to ask you, mind if I PM?

And I was asked, during a trip in delaware, "where I park my horse." I don't think people understand that, while I call this a 'one cow town,' i only mean that it's really slow compared to what I want. We don't all farm (especially in the cities) and I've never been on a horse.

1999 Toyota Rav4. Stick Shift. Does that make me from the ol' west?

They don't use only stats to get the honors program group. its the top 10% of the application pool when looking at the essay, stats, scores, your high school, your classes, your recomendations, etc. and it gets harder every year. but you can actually call and ask to appeal and to have them look at your file again for honors or for admissions if you're interested.

^ lol, if you think being from Denver will get you weird questions, how about being from Alaska? We share the commonalities of snow and mountains, but even Denver doesn't have polar bears and igloos! :D

"hey, falelena, do you live in igloos? do you have teams of dogs pull a sled around? do you live within a hundred miles (do alaskans use "miles"?) of anything?"

haha. i wish we had polar bears though. that would just be cool.
