So I want to.. oh sorry, AM GOING TO transfer to UCLA for psychology 2 years from now, and I am registering for classes and stuff these net few weeks at my CC and online. I just applied online for a spot on the honors program for my CC, which is the TAP program for UCLA, right?. Because I was on UCLA's webpage for the TAP there was a link to my CC which I clicked and it sent me to a page for the honors program. I looked at some syllabi for different courses and for honors students, it lists some extra reading, writing, etc... So is this extra work a good thing? I mean, yeah, I want to do the TAP and be an honors student but at the same time I don't want to get bogged down with extra work? I'm all about that high GPA. I don't know what's best. Should I just go for it? I mean I'm going to be studying my butt off to guarantee a successful transfer anyway, might as well?

Yes, it’s worth it.

At my CC the honors courses weren’t that much harder than other courses. Realistically, if you’re a student capable of attaining a high GPA w/o honors, then honors should not affect your GPA much, if at all. UCLA TAP is absolutely worth it. Honestly, honors ain’t shnitzel dawg. Do it.

I’ve heard the honors distinction at UCLA contains little weight, and is simply an extra little notation on your diploma, and that you can take honors courses outside the program anyway.

If you’re in UCLA TAP, its doesn’t just stop at the notation. When you finish the CC’s honors program, you qualify to become TAP certified, once someone is TAP certified they get priority admission consideration by UCLA. Also, you get the opportunity to apply to UCLA with an alternate major increasing your chances of being admitted that much more.

People can take honors courses at their CC without being in UCLA TAP or even in the CC’s honor program, but why would anyone do that?

TAP is definitely a great thing to have if you’re applying for psych (an impacted major) mostly because it will allow you to select an alternate major as @MeStudyStuff mentioned above.

I wouldn’t pursue TAP if I was applying for a non-impacted major though. Although the honors classes at my CC weren’t too difficult, working them into my schedule of major-intensive classes was a challenge. Also, keep in mind that the required research papers will take up a lot of time.

I would say that it depends on your English level. If you are very good at English, it is worth to take it. Otherwise it is so painful… I tried an easy honors course and now I’m planning to not participate since I’m not major in impacted majors.

Thanks guys. I think I’m going to give it a shot, well first I have to be accepted to it I think actually. But yeah I hear it’s just one or two extra essays maybe, and it would be smart for my particular major like bendaddy said. I’m gonna try to do it fo sho

^Sounds good dawg word up good luck

Trust me, it’s worth it and I mean, it doesn’t hurt to do it anyways. I believe Psychology might be an impacted major there. I’m not 100% sure though. I applied as Communication Studies major and it’s soooooo impacted. I regret not knowing about TAP sooner. UCLA was my first choice. I didn’t get in though. I got into UC Berkeley instead.

The honors courses at my CC were identical to the regular courses, except they require a paper or project. They were easy.

Everyone I know who was TAP certified got into LA this year for impacted majors, including Psych. So I think it is definitely worth it.

I got into UCLA without TAP…that said, I also maintained a high GPA, completed pre-reqs for 2 different majors, worked 30+ hrs a week, was VP of a Club, and tutored on the side. That’s on top of things that I had going on at home. In some cases you just have to make it hard for UCLA to not accept you. I went to PCC for 2 years and of all the honors courses offered I took 4 of the professors teaching honors classes and while they did offer other courses, none really interested me or were only available as a block of classes meaning that i would have to take 3-4 honors classes at a time with specific professors, some of which got very bad reviews on ratemyprofessor. it would have also done two things: 1) require that I take English 1A, 1B and 1C to be able to take English 1C with one of PCC’s most in demand professors instead of just taking English 1A and Physical Science 2, which I did to be able to finish in just 2 years and 2) it would have held me up and require that I stay a 3rd year to complete the last two coureses to total 18 honors units.
