I have a few questions...
Is it now absolutely clear that early February decisions were solely for applicants admitted to the UCI Honors program?

Will there be any more invitations?

What does the honors program entail?

What are the average stats of a Computer Science major?

Can we send mid-year reports to UCs?

I have a 4.5 (4.4 when I applied first semester) a 2210 SAT, top 1% of my class, and have participated in numerous extracurricular activities. I am already paranoid that I wasn't invited to the Honors program and now I'm doubting my stats :(

Bump!! I applied Math/Economics, ranked 10/750, 4.46 weighted GPA, 31 ACT, 770 Math 2 subject test and many of my friends with lower stats were already accepted and I havent heard back. paranoid as well!

Although your optimism is reassuring I’m just a little bit frustrated that I didn’t get an eary reply. If UCI doesn’t think I’m good enough for their honors program then what does that mean?

The people I know who were invited already were either URM or had some odd combination of talents that made UCI seem like a “fit” for them, like dance & science. I think you can still be invited into the honor’s program even with regular admission?

Its difficult to understand how these decisions are made and it must be extremely frustrating. My daughter was accepted early and while her numbers were very high, like those mentioned above, it is difficult to understand why she was chosen and you were not. She is not a URM and does not have some odd combination of talents. Lately I have been wondering if it is because we live close to UCI, in Orange County.

The college admission process is very unpredictable, and every school is different. It doesn’t mean anything if you didn’t get into UCI’s Honors Program.

I want to offer some encouraging words to those who have not been accepted into UCI’s Honors Program. There are likely to be many more stellar students like you than how many applicants UCI can invite to CHP. At a certain point, there is little significant difference between 4.3 GPA and 4.4 GPA or between 2150 and 2250 in SAT scores, so it may just come down to things other than stats: essays, EC, life experiences, etc. – I am not sure about URM, as my son, who was invited, definitely is ORM at UCI. My daughter, who is now a junior at UCI, did not get accepted to CHP as a freshman. She continued to work hard, applied to CHP at the end of her first year, and now a happy CHP camper who always marvels at the quality of her peers. What I am trying to say is, there are so many smart and promising kids out there. You are one of them. You will be fine.

This thread is a bit old, but I thought since you asked, I’d talk a little about what I know about the honors program:

The biggest thing is PRIORITY ENROLLMENT. Like, you’ll still get most of the classes you need even if you don’t have priority enrollment outside of honors, but the process is a little more complicated if you’re ending up having to waitlist all your classes. Seriously, being able to sign up for classes before even the seniors is a pretty sweet deal. It makes that Friday or Monday without classes possible. (Or perhaps the, “I don’t have to get up until at the earliest 11AM everyday.”)

You have to take a course called Humanities Core your freshman year, unless you are a Computer Science Engineering major. Computer Science majors are, unfortunately, out of luck and have to take HumCore. People will tell you the class is from hell, but honestly it’s not. All you have to do is do the work assigned to you, and pay… well at least pay a little attention lol.

From there on, if you stay in the program, you have to take Social Science Core your sophomore year, and if you’re not a science major, you have to take Science Core. Neither of these classes are particularly hard, or so I’ve heard…

You get free breakfast on Fridays. Coffee Hour isn’t a huge thing, but it’s pretty dang nice to have donuts and bagels waiting for you. (Btw the bagels in the dining commons are pretty nasty, but Coffee Hour bagels are great.)

If you take chemistry as a student in the honors program, you HAVE to take honors chemistry. I’m personally not taking chemistry, but a lot of my friends seem to be bending over backwards for that class, so… brace yourself for a lot of work, especially if you’re not good at chemistry.

-The honors program people are super nice, and they’ll help you out when you need an extra hand. It’s pretty nice to have them around, especially since it’s kind of hard to figure out who you need to talk to at times, and it’s nice to always have a group of people you can ask stupid questions to hahaha.

As for the average stats of a Computer Science major, I wouldn’t be able to say, but it seems to be all over the place. I have some friends who are CompSci with amazing grades like yours, and other with grades that are… well not so stellar haha. Really though, you seem like a great student, and your scores are for sure better than mine were last year, so don’t stress too much. :)
