Daughter received her acceptance recently; however her stats are just a hair too low for the honors program (her GPA misses by .02 or so). Based on what Beastman has written in the past, I think she would have no problem petitioning to get in, but I'm curious how this process works. Is it possible they might "round up" and invite her anyway? Would it show up on ISIS, or would she get an e-mail from the Honors folks? And an invitation have come simultaneously with acceptance?

Finally, can anyone suggest a good time to send the appeal? The sooner the better? We understand that ideally she would be in the Honors program by October so that she could apply for housing in Daum. (By the way, there is a rather formal appeal process laid out on the Honors website, but since she's so close to being qualified, and again based on Beastman's experience, I think she may start with an e-mail and see if that may suffice.)

Thanks for any guidance anyone can provide.

When I went to visit, I signed up for the optional honors college tour (my dad and I were the only ones there lol). We sat down with Bob Kirby the associate director and he told me I would need to write an essay explaining why I want to be apart of the Honors program and have a letter of recommendation from my guidance counselor or teacher. He said that if your scores are slightly below the cut off (I had a 3.9 gpa but 25 act) you are more than likely to get in because they like that you show interest and work ethic by writing the essay to get into the honors program right away. Don’t worry. I’m 99% positive she will get in direct admission. Good luck and go hawks!

glorious, I am seeing lately that many of my platitudes of past days are no longer entirely true, as rules have changed since I was in the thick of things 4 years ago. And I know for a fact that the Honors program changed directors about 3 years ago. So go with Marquette’s suggestion - and better yet, shoot an email to Bob Kirby to confirm the timing and process.

But in general I’m sure D will be fine. Unless things have changed 180 degrees, Iowa’s program is much more about inclusiveness of students who want to be there than about elitist hair-splitting to exclude them.

We petitioned also, and I believe notification came via ISIS. We had to look for it.

If she got into the Honors program, it would automatically appear on ISIS when she got in to Iowa. If she didn’t because she was just a tad bit off, I’m sure she’d get in if she petitioned.
