Honors Program

I clicked on my RSVP for the Open House and an invitation to attend a special reception for Honors Program students popped up…is this how the University notifies you if you are accepted into the Honors Program because nothing was written in my acceptance letter

You should receive a letter soon. Last year the letter was dated March 25.

what did the invitation say? and what are the typical stats of someone in the honors program? is there really a difference in honors or just CAS?

Dear Mr. __________,

Congratulations on your admission to Boston University. I am writing to invite you to participate in the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Program. Admission to the Honors Program is offered only to the top 10 percent of our entering class each year. This invitation recognizes your academic talents and success and provides a special opportunity for an enriched experience at Boston University.

blah blah blah

It says that at every Friday Open House there is a special reception for prospective Honors Program students.

I got that too! I'm assuming the letters will come separately, since nothing is mentioned in the acceptance package.

I wonder how they know who will be in the top 10 percent already? Have you accepted your admission yet? Cause, it would seem that a lot of the accepted top top applicants will probably go elsewhere if BU was a safety... If you can't tell, I really want to get into the honors program, because I know I can do it and I want to get good classes... Oh well, maybe if a lot of the really really smart people decline admission, then the top 10 percent will be reevaluated and I will get in... :)

I got an RSVP link in my Applicant Link that said "In recognition of your academic achievement, Louis E. Lataif, Dean of the School of Management at Boston University, cordially invites you to an informal dessert reception and conversation during our Spring Open House Program."

Does this mean I've been accepted to the SMG Honors Program?

(BTW, I'm new to the board, but hey everyone, and congrats to everyone who has been accepted!)

ace586, I got the same thing as you but I have no idea if that means we got into the honors program at SMG.

i would think that getting the invitation in our RSVP links means we are in the honors program...why else would they put them online? atleast that is what i hope

well i got the same thing.....the rsvp for SMG...i dont think it means we're in the honors program..b/c my stats wouldnt really warrant honors status... 1350/1980.. 3.84...29act.. 28/822....but they did seem to want me.. 36k in grants43 total in aid...so who knows..but im excited....ive heard excellent things about SMG..and it WOULD be sweet if it did mean honors..but i doubt it does...im so damn excited about BU

why else would the invitation pop up then? does everyone have this?

well i know for sure that not everyone receives one...cuz i called and they told me that...so i guess its possible...but im guessing it doesnt seem like it..cuz i dont think i really deserve it..but ya never know

Hmm... Well, I guess it's something to ask at the "informal dessert reception and conversation."

"So... Dean... Does this mean we're in the Honors Program or what?" :p

Anyway, we'll see. I'm attending the open house on the 22nd. Hope to see some of you SMGers there!

KG974: is that all they told you when you called? simply that not everyone receives one?

well no...i was calling for a different reason...but that came up int he discussion...and thats all she really said...that only a certain number are offered it..but who knows..i may of misheard or forgot exactly waht she said

Is there an honors program for the engineering school?

Here is some info on SMG Honors Program. Looks like if you achieve a high GPA Freshman year you can apply "after the fact" same as CAS Honors Program.

An opportunity for a select group of outstanding students to develop into the next generation of management leaders

Maybe you're used to working harder than your classmates. Imagine a setting in which everyone is working just as hard, and is just as bright, motivated, and talented as you.

Now imagine how far you'd push each other.

Honors Program Overview
The curriculum is balanced between a core of requirements and a broad variety of electives. Our aim is to develop competence with flexibility. There is a strong focus on writing skills, which are developed through required composition courses and in specialized honors seminars. These seminars are offered on a variety of subjects allowing honors students the opportunity to engage with faculty on current business topics and management trends. The program can be adapted to pursue a minor, study abroad or complete a dual degree.

Honors Program Privileges
Year-long colloquium series for Honors Program freshmen.
Participation in exclusive seminars
Close working relationships with faculty
Accumulation of a record of extraordinary coursework
Attainment of Honors designation on transcript
Identification as a "high-potential" candidate, both for corporate recruiters and graduate school admissions
Strong Honors Program community fostered by monthly meetings and social events.

How it Works
Honors Admission: Incoming freshmen do not apply to the Honors Program, but are invited to join by the Dean on the recommendation of the Board of Admissions. Students not invited as incoming freshmen, but who carry a 3.5 cumulative GPA or above by the end of freshman year, may apply to enter the Honors Program as sophomores. Students cannot enter the Honors Program after the first semester of their sophomore year.

Honors Retention: The minimum requirements for staying in the Honors Program are a 3.3 grade-point average at the School and a grade of "B" in each of the required honors components.

Graduating from the Honors Program: Students successfully completing the requirements of the Honors Program will have the "Honors" designation on their Boston University transcripts.

Please contact Assistant Dean Sandra Procopio at 617/353-5335 or sprocopi@bu.edu.

See above for link to the various sections of the CAS Honors site. Note that there is an optional overnight experience in the early Fall. Our S would have nothing to do with all the Honors social type offerings. He just takes the Honors class each semester which includes a few special events and trips. The Honors designation gets added to your transcript and is a good thing when applying to grad or law school.

so dogs...if i was invited to the Dean of SMG at one of the open houses...i may have gotten into the honors program there?
