Honors Program

D got invite/acceptance letter today from UNC Honors Program! Good luck everybody!

My D did too! We are so excited!!

Are you guys in-state? I got nothing yet, but I'm in the northeast...maybe I'll get something tomorrow. Where are you all from?

did you get an email or just a letter? Also, where are you from?

A package w/a letter, but no e-mail. In-state.

hmm the people who got into the honors program list their stats (GPA, class rank, SAT Scores, EC's, etc.) please? i just wanna see what kind of people get into their honors program.

I participated in the UNC chat online with students and admissions officers. They said honors students are selected in February. Are you sure you guys know what you're talking about?

I think the group who received the Honors packet this week may also be merit scholarship finalists and invited to Scholarship Day on 1/26 (true here).

Rather than posting stats, why not wait until April and post the schools where the Honors group were accepted? That may be more meaningful. The Honors designation is one UNC tactic for competing for the top kids, especially from in-state. That's why they established the merit scholarships as well.

Yes, we are in-state and going to Scholarship Days tomorrow. And yes, we are feeling very lucky/blessed right now! Carolina is smart to go after these kids so early.

D got the Honors package today - no email.

D was also in-state and went to Scholarship Day today (very good). There is no e-mail (and nothing on your UNC site) to show Honors program accepts you, just the letter and into from the Honors Program. From today's Scholarship Day presentation, it looks like the 120ish kids that were there are the 4.0 UW..or close to it/ lots of AP or IB credit / 2250 SAT / Top of class group. Most have applied and are still waiting to hear from Ivies, U of Chicago, NWestern, MIT, G'town, etc. UNC obviously wants to get to the top of their lists. As it has been stated here in CC, (and they echoed today), there will be another Scholarship Day event in March. Today's group will find out within 2 weeks what merit offers they may get from UNC.

Just want to let everyone know, they continue to accept people into honors for several months. My d applied very late to UNC-CH, almost didn't make the RA deadline. She received a likely letter within a few weeks, then an acceptance letter at the same time as the other RA accepted candidates and about a week letter an invitation into honors. I would think EA kids not yet notified would be reconsidered in the context of the RA pool and may still yet be offered honors.

Also, honors classes are open to all students and it is possible to get into honors as an upperclassman.

Likely letters and early notifications of honors are a type of recruitment tool, but Moreheads and Robertsons are the heavy guns.

can EA kids be invited to scholarship day in march if they didnt get an invite to this one in jan?

My S got his Honors Program letter yesterday, but was not invited to yesterday's scholarship day. We are OOS and I'd be interested to know if there were any OOS folks at yesterday's event.

Yes. I was there. They had the students sitting at tables, and parents at other tables. The students from NC were sitting together, and those from OOS were grouped together--at least near to where I was sitting. We had folders with our names and where we were from posted on the outside. I saw that there were students from TN, TX, Alabama, SC. I didn't look too hard though, so as not to look nosey.
I do know that all the students there had been invited into the Honors Program. Though they didn't announce it or anything, I spoke one on one with the Honors Director after the program and asked if we all had been invited into Honors, and he said "yes". I received my packet the day before Scholarship Day.

Yay, I got my invite yesterday!

RelaxDad - I'm OOS and was invited to scholarship day. I didn't go.

My son got his honors program packet/invite yesterday as well as a letter from the biology department. He was not invited to scholarship day, unfortunately. He really likes UNC but I guess he's not high on their list (he wasn't offered any merit $). Luckily, he's gotten large merit offers elsewhere and he's waiting to see if he's still in the running for the Jefferson Scholarship at UVA (made it through 2 interviews so far - funny how this process works - inconsistent to say the least. He's very passionate about learning but maybe he didn't get that across in his UNC app.
