Honors Program

How do you know if you are in the Honors Program at UNC?
I was invited to Scholarship day (Jan 30th) and I actually went there not like my friend...
(I already decided that I am attending UNC)

they mailed out invitations. i'm guessing you'll get something in the mail? haha i don't really know. i'm hoping for one and i didn't get invited to scholarship day, so i'm definitely nervous.

hopefully something around this week...

I got a call today I got accepted into the HP at UNC!!!

Congrats! Do you mind posting your stats?

Oh, I just checked my messages, I got in too! :) Congratulations!

called my house today to tell me i got in!
basic stats for those interested:
White, Male
ACT- 35
SAT II- 780 math, 780 bioM, 790 US
GPA- 3.89 out of 4.3 UW
Rank- 1st Decile
Major EC: 3 varsity sports, sports captain, violin 14 years and bass 3 years(and related activities), 400-500 hours of lab research over the past two summers

still hoping to hear about scholarships... anyone know anything about that?

so some of you got a notification in your UNC email?

no call for me so i guess that means i didn't get in :(

I apologize for being vague, when I wrote 'messages' I meant the answering machine on my home phone. I did not receive any e-mails, on my UNC homepage or otherwise.

actually, dont lose faith. they admit ppl to the honors college in waves. they may do the same for scholarships?

when i asked people in the admissions office, they said they send out invitations to all their first-application candidates at one time. so my faith is done lost...

I'm sure some people admitted into the Honors Program will turn UNC down for another school, so maybe they will reinvite people from the early round?

they must send out another wave with regular apps... right?

I got the call too!

Just wondering if everyone who was invited to the honors program also received a merit scholarship? Was hoping that maybe getting a likely letter would mean an honors invite even without a scholars day invite.. But I guess not here anyway..

A likely letter is one that just says you got in. It says nothing about getting into Honors or being considered for a scholarship.

Please don't get too excited or disappointed about not getting into honors if that happens.

As others have already said you can still take honors classes, you just won't have priority registration for them and you can always apply for honors once you are in school and have performed well in the classes you have taken.

Anyone can graduate with honors because it requires writing a thesis and please note, you will NOT graduate with honors by being in the honors program without writing a thesis.

Most people in honors for the first two years find it difficult to find honors classes for junior and senior year due to majors requirements. If you plan to double major it will become almost impossible to take honors classes the last two years due to time and scheduling considerations. This isn't problematic because by then the great majority of your classes will be quite small and challenging anyway.

I think priority enrollment for the Honors classes is a big factor and I also want to live in an Honors dorm.

There's no such thing as an Honors dorm.

It's true, every year they kind of flock incoming honors freshmen towards one dorm, but that certainly isn't the rule. When I was a freshman, a good number of incoming honors students were put in Cobb. But then I for instance was put in Kenan, and several honors students were put down south. The year before me I'm pretty sure they were putting incoming honors students in the directional dorms on south campus. And, no matter what, every dorm has plenty of non-honors students.

I personally was so glad to be in Kenan rather than the honors dorm. A lot of people in the honors program are a little elitist when they first show up to Carolina. By the time sophomore year rolls around, that all melts away and the only thing that matters is how much you're participating in the world around you.
