Hello! My son was admitted to the HHC and would like to live in an HRC. The website mentioned that these are located in three different neighborhoods on campus. Can anyone out there comment on the characteristics of the different dorms? I think he would like someplace social but not a major party dorm.
Also, can anyone comment on Teter as a dorm in general? Someone recommended it as a good honors housing option in a different thread… Thanks!
Well, here’s what I found: http://www.weareiu.com/blog/cat-huynhs-blog/iu-cribs-teter-edition
Looks like a dorm from times past :).
Thanks @turbo93! The decor is definitely “retro” but I do find all of the common space and recreational options impressive. Having attended smaller schools myself, my dorms only had a small lounge on each floor. And the location sounds ideal. I’ve read positive reviews other places as well. : )
My son currently lives in the Teter honors dorm and is very happy there. Teter is social yet not known for partying. McNutt is known as a party dorm. Teter is in a great location since it is centrally located. It is old but well kept.
Thank you @Annaed! Sounds like Teter is the best choice. Does your son like Hutton Honors College?
Apparently HRC’s require double rooms? the parents would like a single if possible :).
Would you consider the Residence Scholars Program? Sounds like a good way to be with serious students while living in a single. My son is leaning towards the HRC option at this time, but we would be comfortable with either.
She mentioned that, from our IU experts, is that still at Ashton? any thoughts? Of course she’s a princess that never picked up a sock in her life so I gotta wonder about the chores aspect
@turbo93, yes Residence Scholars is at Ashton. DS was in it last year. There are a number of buildings that make up Ashton and all of the Residence Scholars were in Johnston. Chores are really simple and not time consuming at all. They get training at the beginning of the year. It is an older building but all single rooms which is great. From my perspective they were also large rooms. DS had more closet space than he needed and we are international so he had everything with him. There is a mix of undergrads and also a mix of disciplines. DS is a music major so I think having some residence friends was good as he spent the majority of his time with other music students. Let me know if you have any questions.
That sounds great, @BCVIOLINMOM , I think we are more concerned with the non-deterministic nature of freshman housing than anything else. Hopefully there is an application specifically for this dorm, and the reduced rate helps too.
There is an application for Residence Scholars so make sure your son fills it out.
@Candlewoodgal My son does like being in the Hutton Honors College. Everyone in the honors dorm is more academically minded, and that helps with studying! His friend has lived in Ashton for 2 years now as a Residential Scholar. I know she gets a significant reduction in her housing cost which is a nice benefit. She has a single room.
Thank you @Annaed.
