Who else besides me applied for honors scholarships, and what did you write your essay on? (I did mine on The Aeneid, but it was rather a lame one.) The competition seems fairly competitive... I wonder, how many people do they ultimately select?

I applied. I did my essay on "Eveline" by James Joyce. Ugh, something about the W&L essay prompts and the Honors Scholarships essay prompts terrified me. I was so intimidated by them, and I think they're my two weakest essays. It's very unfortunate.

It does seem fairly competitive, but I have hope. Also, the W&L alumni association of the peninsula I live on (the eastern peninsula of Maryland) have a full-ride scholarship they give out to a student from the area who enrolls, but it's given out roughly every four years (once the person who last had it graduates). I got a letter about it, which I assume means that the person who currently holds the scholarship is an 05 student. So, if the GWHonors thing doesn't work out for me, there's still hope.

I was thinking about this the other day when all of my friends were getting their rolling admissions letters from other colleges-- won't those who qualify to attend the scholarship competition weekend know they've been admitted to the school when they're invited? I know the weekend is in March, which is before the April 1 notification date of the other applicants, but I'm not really sure how it's going to work.

I applied, wrote my essay on healthcare reform. Really hope to get a scholarship, and I would love an excuse for another trip to Virginia in March.

I applied ED but I think for regular, if you applied for the scholarship, you will hear your admissions decision earlier than other regular decision applicants, which is probably why the deadline is a month earlier.

Nice.

I too am so looking forward to going back to Lexington!

I agree about the essay topics being difficult... but then again, it was nice to be able to write about something other than what unique and diverse qualities I would be bringing to the school. I used the common application rather than the actual W&L one. (I hope that doesn't count against me.)
Hey willywonka, I thought you might appreciate this... have you seen the new charlie and the chocolate factory preview? (It has Johnny Depp) Oh well, sorry that was a bit lame.
Thanks for your responses, anyway

Haha, no problem. I have seen it, it looks like it will be really cool. Of course, I (obviously) really like the old one, so I guess we'll see.

I used the W&L application because when I started filling it out, I wasn't aware that the Common App existed or that W&L accepted it. Did you still have to write one of the three W&L essay prompts along with the Common App. essay, or just the Common App. one?

The common app can be used instead of the W&L app, they're treated the same and you only have to write the common app essay.

I liked doing the honor scholarship essay, it let me rant about this country's healthcare system.

My son applied last year and was invited to campus in March. He applied RD and was notified in late January that he was a finalist. I think there were @75 finalists in Lexington for the competition.....maybe a few more. He was awarded full tuition and enrolled this fall. Good luck.

Indeed... the common appication is a useful invention! I'm applying to six schools, and I've been able to use the same essay (well, modified just a bit) for five of them. The W&L supplement was quite simple, fortunately.
Now I'm so impatient to know whether or not I'm accepted! (I suppose that's obvious though, since I'd expect everyone else is as well.)

What is "Eveline" about? I'm in the process of reading "Ulysses," but I've never read anything by James Joyce.

Phrunk, congrats to your son. He must have been very qualified.

Karee, "Eveline" is about a girl by the same name from Dublin, Ireland (of course) who has every reason to want to leave the city for good. It's only four pages long, but every part of it is packed full of value and great writing; it's a great read!

I didn't realize the notification for the GWS is so early (late January). I'm really anxious to see how it ends up for me...@75 people isn't a lot.

I applied for the honors scholarship too. I did the "most significant scientific or technological advance in the 20th century" and wrote about penicillin and, more generally, antibiotics.

Does anyone want to post stats? No one has and I don't want to be the first one...

Well, okay..it is kind of weird to post them for some reason. I don't know how in-depth to be, since I don't do this that often.

1580 (800 V 780 M)
800 Writing, 800 American History, 660 Lit., 650 Spanish
3.9 UW, 4.5 W
2/250. We don't rank, but my GC will put it for the GWS thing, given that it's required.
White male, eastern shore of Maryland. First gen. college student, low-income, one of four kids.
Like I said, the essays were intimidating to me, I don't think I sent in my best work.
I work 20-25 hours a week, and my other ECs are nothing spectacular-- drama, internet radio, fundraising in several organizations, most with leadership.
No fantastic awards-- some art pieces selected for shows, AP Scholar with Honor, Maryland Distinguished Scholar Honorable Mention.
Positive, warm recommendations, but nothing that's jaw-dropping.

Is that it? I feel a little on edge about the intangibles of the application, but it's useless to worry about them now.

Ok, now that you have posted and the weirdness is gone...

-1570 (800 V, 770M)
-800 Writing, 790 US History, 760 Spanish (notice that we took same 3 SAT IIs and got almost same scores on two of them and got almost same scores on SAT...weird)
-4.0uw
-1/465
-9 APs, 5s on the four AP tests taken so far (US Hist, Spanish, Eng Lang, World Hist)
-White male from FL
-Work ~10 hours per week
-ECs are good, but not great (leadership and involvement, but nothing really national level. I think best, and most distinguishing, one is my shadowing doctors over summers)
-National Merit Semi-Finalist
-One great teacher rec, one good teacher rec, and the guidance rec is...um...to the best of her ability
-Essays...who knows?

Haha, don't be ashamed to say it, you crushed me on the Spanish SAT II.

I forgot the AP stuff, even more similarities: 9 APs, a mixture of 4s (Engl Lang, Government, Chemistry) and a 5 (US History).

Yeah, my stats are on the other board.

Not as good as you two but maybe my essays are good enough to get me in.

Here are my stats (in brief)
1470 (780 V 690 M)
750 Writing, 700 Math IIC, 760 French, 600 Chemistry

16-year-old white female, one of five kids
REALLY tiny private school in Texas
My school doesn't rank... although I'm sure I'm 1 or 2, there are only 10 kids in my class! (seriously)
I'm taking the hardest courseload my school offers, which amounts to 6 APs in all.
Last year I received: 4 (US Hist), 4 (Latin Vergil), 5 (Eng Lang) (AP scholar)
This spring I'll take: Calculus, French, and Chemistry

Essays? I liked them well enough, but it's impossible to say what other people will think...
2 great teacher recs, I've got no clue about the counselor rec

Just curious-- what are you guys interested in studying? For me, geology, art, or perhaps classics.

No idea, but I love languages and want to learn some more in college. I'd also love to take art classes and specialized literature and philosophy classes.

I want to major in Biology with a possible double major or minor in Spanish.
