I know there were a few people on this forum who attended the competition a few weeks back, so I thought I'd start a thread where we could discuss what we liked and disliked about W&L. The actual decisions should arrive in the mail any day now...

Anyone care to discuss W&L? If you get enough money, will you go? What did you think of the stereotypes about the school (rich, conservative, southern kids)?

I'm not a GWHS but I am a finalist for a regional scholarship so I would assume that they are sent out at the same time. Do you know when we are supposed to get them? I'm also ED1 so I know that I love W&L.

We will probably be notified by the end of this week...Two years ago, they received their letters March 26. Last year, it was March 30 (I think). So any day now, we should be hearing from W&L.

So gchris are you almost definitely going to W&L? I obviously am but full tuition would make it much nicer, the regional scholarships are all or nothing, or at least that is the impression I got.

My S loved the GWHS competition experience so much last yr that he wanted to withdraw from another scholarship competition! Esp liked staying on campus with current students, the interview panels with students, the fact that the faculty interviewers knew his application so well, the warm welcome across campus. He did not have similar experiences at other competitions and this made him really appreciate that no one is ever just a number at W&L. He loves being a General.

Received my letter.... half tuition which I didn't even realize was a posibility because I was a regional finalist. Helps some but it's not much bigger than my need based package but it will get rid of the loans I guess.

D received half tuition for all four years if she keeps up 3.0 - totals to about 69K. She however likes other schools she has gotten into better - sigh. Prol between Duke, UVA, and GT.

Congratulations on your scholarships and acceptances!

For those still trying to decide, recommend attending Accepted Students Day at W&L (and other schools) before deciding. Overnights and classroom visits also can be very valuable. One thing we saw over the past year among my S's friends as they have made their way through freshman year at many college campuses -- those who attended classes, stayed overnight, ate in the dining hall, "went out" with current students, etc seem to be much happier with their choices. Stands to reason, but I'm still surprised by how many make this big decision without such experiences.

I got my letter today!!! Accepted with a FULL RIDE George Washington Scholarship!!!! This is seriously the best day of my life. The scholarship covers the full cost of tuition and fees, as well as standard room and board for four years (valued at $44,170 per year)!!!

Good luck to all...Guess I'm gonna be a General!
