Honors Societies

Hello, I was recently invited by my college to join the honors society Phi Theta Kappa and I’m wondering if it looks good on a transcript? The society seems vaguely like a scam, so i’m curious.

I assume you’re a community college student right? Phi Theta Kappa can help you get scholarships when you eventually apply to transfer to a 4 year university. Drexel University offered me an additional 500$/quarter because of my PTK membership (which I got like a week before I applied lol)

I see, so it’s best for getting scholarships and such. The $75 fee to join had made me a bit wary. Sounds like a pretty good deal though since I’ll have to transfer eventually haha.

Yea and there’s honor societies that don’t do anything too. However here’s some examples of the scholarships you can get.

Rutgers says:

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships ($8,000 per year)
Phi Theta Kappa scholarship recipients are notified by December (for spring enrollment) and March (for fall enrollment). Criteria for consideration are specific so please review them carefully:
• Students who are enrolled full-time in a transfer program at a community college at the time of application.
• Students who are a member of their community college’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at the time of application.
• Students who have completed 50 credits at the time of application.
• Students who will be earning an associate’s degree in arts (A.A.) or science (A.S.) by the time of enrollment and have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.8 for consideration; grades from all college courses are considered.
• Students must enroll directly from the community college, with no intervening enrollment at another institution.

And like I said, Drexel gave me one too as part of my package and they didn’t even advertise it on their website.
