Which honors societies are actually worth putting down on an application? I'm seeing many posters noting how some honors societies like NHS are not worth putting on an application.

But which ones are worth using in one of the 5 award spaces? Or is it better just listing them all in an activity space or additional info space on the CommonApp?

(Science honors society, mu alpha theta (math), cum laude, spanish/french honors society, etc.)

I don’t know until I joined CC recently I didn’t know those existed!

The ones that AREN’T worth putting are ones you had to/have to pay for like the National Society of High School Scholars. Things such as the National Honors Society or branches of it like the Science national honors society are fine to put down. I can’t speak for which one is more important than the other for you to list down though.

If you are really involved list them (like I am listing NAHS because I am president), otherwise hold off unless you have nothing better to list.

NHS is worth putting, but it doesn’t carry much weight, especially if one thinks that really prestigious schools give it a lot of weight.

NHS is a fine addition. Although for the T-20, schools most everyone likely would qualify for NHS just like everyone has a great GPA and SAT. It may not put one ahead of the pack, but it corroborates one as belonging to the top of the pack. In a system where Adcmon is desperately trying to weed out the pretenders, NHS will add a little credibility.
