Honors VS non-Honors??

Does it make that big of a difference?

If you are offered a spot in Hutton, you should take it. There is no downside. Search this forum for Hutton. There are several threads that explain the benefits.

What if I’m not offered a spot? I’m going to be a transfer student and I don’t think my stats are good enough.

Should I just go ahead and take the regular courses and just focus on getting good grades instead of worrying over the honors part?

I want to get into it after my first semester. I missed the automatic qualifications by 20 points on the SAT.

If you are not offered a spot in Hutton, but want to submit a petition to be admitted, you will first need to complete a semester at IU, as outlined below, with a minimum 3.7 GPA for that coursework.

My advice would be to concentrate on getting the best grades you can in your first semester, and every semester thereafter, whether Hutton is a goal or not. A high GPA on your transcript is more important when you graduate than a Hutton Honors notation, although having both would look even better. Future employers do care about your GPA.

[Information for Prospective Students](<a href=“Indiana University Bloomington”>Indiana University Bloomington)

“Students who do not enter the Hutton Honors College as incoming freshmen may still be eligible for admission if their academic work during their first semester at IU is outstanding. After completion of that semester, you may ask that your record be reviewed if you are interested in participating in Hutton Honors College courses and programs. To be considered for admission at that time, you must have completed, during your first full semester at IU, a minimum of 14 graded academic credits (grades of S for Satisfactory will not be counted), and you must have maintained a 3.7 GPA.”

I got 1310, I needed 1350. How many more questions right is that?
Frustration!

Anyway, does anyone have some hands on experience with getting into the honor’s program after Spring semester? Preferably from a student’s perspective.

The only time you can be admitted to Hutton is after the Fall of your freshman year. I’m not going to be admitted until August, but the only grades that went into that were my freshman Fall grades. I just had an incomplete from the Fall that wasn’t completed until May, so they weren’t able to admit me back in January. 3.7, 14 academic credit hours, and you will be admitted after the Fall semester.

Is there any added scholarships or benefits financially?

I’m an incoming freshman and I turned down Hutton. I didn’t like the idea of being required to take honors classes that I may not want to. (I had enough of that in high school!) Joining the Honors College is a personal decision, and joining your departmental honors program can look just as good to prospective employers.

As for scholarships, there is a Hutton scholarship as part of the SSa for those offered admission to HHC.

Be sure to browse the Hutton site. It has a ton of good information.

Its a better deal. And in this economy I would take all the help I can get

Being a Hutton student does not require you to take any Hutton classes. It is an additional 5 dollars a semester though, if that makes a difference.

I’d just like to add that I think being in Hutton has big advantages for freshman Kelley students who hope to get into Kelley honors.

Is it a big advantage because it looks good on the application or because of the honors business classes you can take in place of regular ones. If because of the classes, which do you think really help? My son is signed up for honors version of Computer in Business for fall, but which others should be try to get in the coming semesters?

It’s an advantage because of the classes. Computer in Business Honors is definitely a good one to take. Also Technology honors (X202), Honors Business presentations (C-106), Honors Communications (C-205), and Honors Business Law (L-293).

Whether one should take the honors or regular accounting classes is debatable I think, and probably depends on the individual student.

I know for a direct admit into Kelley they will look at weighted GPA if provided on your transcript, but what about Hutton? Is that weighted as well?
Also, on our tour they stated to get the Honors designation upon graduation you needed 26 credits in Honors courses.

Yes, they will go by weighted if it’s the one provided by the high school.

You need 26 hours to get the honors designation, but a lot of Hutton students (especially business), don’t care about getting the honors designation.

AT the risk of sounding ignorant, why dont they care about the Honors designation?
Doesnt that help when it comes to internships and jobs?

It could be completely different outside of the business school, but within Kelley, it’s just not nearly as big of a deal as Kelley Honors. It has a lot of benefits (pre-Icore honors classes, study abroad funding, scholarships), but most of the Kelley students really just want to be in Kelley Honors.

The honors notation is 21 credit hours, not 26. You could take nearly all of the honors classes in Kelley and earn the Hutton honors notation. These qualify from Kelley:

Plus their are honors versions of micro and macroeconomics, finite, and I think E370.

I had 3.95 gpa in freshman and 3.68 in sophomore and 2.74 in junior year and I took bunch of honor classes. and three ap classes. I got 3 D on second semster of junior year and got 2.4 gpa and got 3 on first semester. I know my gpa is pretty bad but my sat score isnt too bad. got 740 on math and 600 in cr. Im asian and out of state which will be disadvantage. I never thought about actually going to college untill about 2 weeks ago when I realized that I gotta actually do my work. So im planning on raising gpa on senior year to show that im not a ■■■■■■. My EC are alright such as eagle scout and being good at trumpet in state level. also was in baseball team in 3 years but not in varisty. I also did volunteering every week for 2 years. If i don’t have shot, just say I don’t have shot. I am going to write some personal issue I went throguh in my junior year which affected my grade. Sorry for bad grammar
