Honors vs Scholars

As I understand it, Honors is the more selective program, correct?

If a student is invited to the Honors program, could he/she ask to be in one of the Scholars programs instead?

I noticed they have specific topics of interest in the Scholars program that don't seem to be an option in the Honors program.

Well first of all, lets not count our chickens before they hatch!

I feel like the most logical answer would be that you are invited to where you are invited, however, it never hurts to kindly ask the programs themselves. I think that each has an allotment of students they invite and the invitations would be non transferable, but you never know!

But I heard from multiple people that honors get much nicer housing. and umd freshman dorms are small haha.

my brother was invited to both honors and scholars when he was admitted (3 yrs ago) so i think if you get an invite to honors, you can choose btwn honors n scholars. that or they have completely independent selection processes and he just happened to get into both…his dorm was actually really nice freshman year (he chose scholars) and actually nicer than friends of mine who live in denton (i think its denton…) who are in the honors college.

oh and north campus dorms>south campus dorms. just sayin.

Denton (where most honors kids stay first year) has nicer lounges (air conditioning, and a great retreat during the hot months). The rooms have no air conditioning, which doesn’t matter after the first three weeks or so, decent heating, and minimal problems. Freshmen housing isn’t the best. It’s just something you get over.

As for being invited to both. I don’t think that happens anymore and if it does, it’s usually a mistake (I had a friend who went through this and it turns out she was just invited to scholars).

I’ve never heard of someone being invited to honors and switching to scholars. But I guess you could…?

And I have to disagree with the above post because south campus suites have carpeting and air conditioning (at least those on the quad) and a better proximity to route one. The South Campus diner is supposedly better (I mean…they have a tv…?). The only exception to this will be Oakland Hall, when its finished (Fall 2011). North Campus is far from everything (especially Denton)

Denton WILL have air conditioning in Fall 2011. It does not now, but it will for the incoming class. So that should be cool for them. Also, you don’t choose between Honors and Scholars anymore.

I’ve never been in the South Campus suites, but I’d be shocked if they weren’t better than North Campus. (but you can’t be on S. Campus as a freshman anyway) They’re actual suites, with a private bathroom and common room, versus just a room you share with one or two others and one communal bathroom for the whole wing. Also, I think South Campus diner is slightly better - it’s the same as N. Campus, only it has a make your own pasta bar on weekdays.

If you get into honors, I have no idea why you would choose scholars instead since honors is definitely seen as more prestigious. That being said, howevr, I really enjoy being in scholars!

yeah my brother lives in the art scholars dorms and supposedly they have the worst dorms in college park.

I heard honors is more prestigious but both are great programs nevertheless.

There’s an international studies focus as an option in the scholars program. I didn’t see anything like that in the honors program. That’s why I was wondering if someone could turn down honors and elect to be in a scholars program instead.

I thought that Anne Arundel, which is on S. Campus and for University Honors, is also for freshmen? I know it has carpet and air conditioning!

First off anyone who thinks North Campus dorms are better have never been to South Campus dorms…It’s a much nicer part of campus. Me and my friends joke that north campus is where they shove all the freshman so they can be embarassing alcoholics together because they don’t want you messing with the nice part of campus. Spend a weekend night sitting on the quad and then try to spent the same amount of time sitting by, say, the north campus diner and see if you can even fit the difference in obnoxiousness level on the same scale.

Anne Arundel is technically South Campus, but it’s on North Hill, which is the farthest North of the South Campus dorms (If you couldn’t tell from the location) near Queen Anne’s, Dorchester, and St. Mary’s. (Dorchester houses writer’s house and global communities, St. Mary’s is the language house) Honors students can request to live there, (though I highly suggest Queen Anne’s over Anne Arundel) though I’ve noticed it’s heavily weighted towards B/K students and you have to request it. Even though a friend of mine says there’s a new living/learning program being hosted in one of them, but I can’t remember which.

Also of the South Campus dorms the one I hear repeated complaints about is Wicomico (Honors Humanities…and not saying anything about the freshman, but there is a definite trend lol) I personally live in the Caroline singles which are adjacent to Wicomico. The dorm isn’t super-nice, nor is it air conditioned, but the dorm is so unbelievably quiet and clean that it’s worth it. (There is one janitor for each floor, and the floors are about half the size of a high rise dorm’s. They are each here from about nine-four cleaning the same stretch of hallway. It’s honestly unbelievable how clean it is for a college park dorm) Plus the location is good for majors who are often on the mall or in Tawes, Art-Soc, etc. You’re right near route 1, and about five minutes from the strip mall with Dominoes, CVS, Chipotle etc. Panda and 7-11 are even closer.

As for the two dining halls: South Campus beats North Campus in breakfast/brunch and lunch (Pasta and Omlette Bar, plus Mexican and Stir Fry which is amazing) but fails miserably in the Late Night department. (No one can explain why it closes from 7-9 either) but Common’s shop is in the same building and has very convenient hours.

And note to everyone: Denton has been swearing they would have air conditioning for next fall since the year before I got here. (2008)

"And note to everyone: Denton has been swearing they would have air conditioning for next fall since the year before I got here. (2008) "

LOL, … THIS time it’s for real …

What about the new underclassmen dorm being built for this next year? It will have A/C, though im not sure if it will be geared for sophomores or freshies.

Oakland hall is for juniors and sophomores. No freshman.

It’s the reason that for the first time in recent memory juniors have been guarenteed housing for next year.

Denton Hall is definitely getting A/C in the fall. They’ve got the boxes already set up in half the rooms. And there’s notices in the building, and e-mails that have informed us of it (along with info about all the construction going on). Though, I’m not sure why it matters to the current residents that it’s getting A/C in the fall, considering 98% of us won’t be living here then…

my bro lived in either queen annes or st marys last year and his dorm room was SO small compared to dorms ive seen in easton, denton, elkton, or cambridge on north campus…thats just my experience w umd…also no a/c in his dorm. dont take my word as gold tho lol

St. Mary’s are apartments, and Queen Anne’s has AC…so I don’t think you got those names right…But I wouldn’t actually count the North Hill Dorms as true south campus.

Back on topic and off dorms.

Scholars is a 2 yr citation upon completion at graduation. Honors is 4 yrs.

The thing is a Scholars candidate doesn’t have the option to upgrade to Honors. As stated not many will downgrade to Scholars. Typically if there is movement it would be to Gemstone.

If you recall on the application they asked if you wanted to play in groups. That was for Gemstone. If you said no, you will only have Honors and Scholars as an option.

If you said Yes, than you have all 3 on the table.

Our DS said No, and he got Scholars…OOS, 2190 SAT, 4.1 wgpa, NMSF, NYLC student, 2 time VA state TKD champ, Bronze medalist TKD Jr Olympics, Life Guard, and the traditional crap like NHS, FNHS, LNHS, APs, and Jump start.

He did govt, his back up was international relations (which is now his minor). As a soph., he worked on the Hill for a Sen., 20 hrs a week the entire semester.

The real issue is these majors belong to BOS, and at UMDCP they have the highest amount of students, but get the least amount of funding, this is why they did a sit out, ly or maybe it was 2 yrs ago, to protest the inequality of how the school was dispersing their funds.

They changed how that works though…you don’t automatically get offered Gemstone. You get accepted to Honors, then you choose the order you prefer each program (there’s like 5 now - University Honors, Gemstone, Honors Humanities, Entrepreneurship, and Digital Cultures & Creativity). They try to give everyone their first choice. I don’t know if the group question is even still on the app…I don’t remember it last year, but I could’ve just forgot.

i just google maped it bc i have to be right. worcester was the building…i thought queen annes bc thats where he had to go to get a spare key whenever he got locked out. im smart i promise. lol
