I would say I have pretty good stats, (Valedictorian, (1540 on SAT), (800-800-790-770 on SAT II's), (5, 5, 5, 4 on AP's), (6, 7 on IB's), National Merit Semifinalist (1 of 7 at school). My academic index, using the calculator, is a 236/240 which is a 9/9. I've applied Harvard SCEA.

I was just wondering what are the odds that my founding a table tennis club, and becoming president of it, is something that can significantly make me stand out to Harvard besides my academic side (not necessarily a "hook" or anything, but something unique)?

I don't know about it being a hook, but my son has told me that there are some phenomenal table tennis players at Harvard...one is a casual friend of his that he says could have gone to the Olympics. Anyway, if you expressed interest in continuing your involvement in college, (I think maybe there's a team on the club level...not sure tho)that could be viewed as a nice contribution to college life there.

I play table tennis. While your founding of a table tennis club would not be considered a hook, it would definitely stand out. I'm trying to start one of my own in my school, but unfortunately we are several thousands dollars in debt and the mere thought of buying tables would cause many heart attacks.

However, if you're really good, don't expect to get anywhere in Harvard. As far as I know, H does have an intramural team, but I also know for a fact that none of the players there are even REMOTELY CLOSE to making the Olympics.

Personally, I am hoping that Harvard's admissions officers love table tennis, and I'm banking that my junior olympic gold medalist status will qualify as a hook there.

I remember that at Harvard they have two ping pong tables in the Math Department of the Science Center on the 3rd floor. I remember going there with Chancellow_Pheonix and playing like at 1 am. Good times...And then having my calc professor come out and be like "Shouldnt you be studying?" (our exam was the next day). LOL. Good times though.
