Hooking Up: I'm confused

I just want to start by saying I'm not as dorky as this thread will make me appear, but what exactly is hooking up? Would it constitute just making out or is hooking up supposed to have sex involved. What is included in the realm of "hooking up". I should probably get this down before I head to college next year since people will be saying " I hooked up with..." and I'll just be nodding and whatnot w/o really knowing what it is he/she did.

"hooking up" doesn't have a defined meaning. It basically describes getting some play without emotional attachment. Commonly it is used to describe "making out" but other people use it commonly as a reference to sex and all the steps in between.

basically, everything is in the realm of hooking up.

people use that phrase to mean a variety of different things, so you still won't know haha

Hooking up amongst any people I know means you had sex. I have never heard of making out as considered hooking up.

i think hooking up to mean making out/messing around is only common at the high school level (and even then by the time you're an upperclassman the definition def. changes). in college, it's having sex.

Try then probing them with questions like:

"Oh really? Where?"

That might clarify it, unless your friend is the type to have sex in an elevator or something....

hooking up is similar to say "messing around" -- it doesn't have to be sex, although many times it may be
