Some people consider it to be making out, while others go as far as saying it's having sex. When you guys tell your friends you hooked up, what exactly do you mean?

PS I suspect that the term's popularity is because of the fact that its ambiguity enables guys to act as though they did more than they really did.

Hook-up has a very wide definition, everything from a drunken make-out session to intercourse. I traditionally hear it as the former, because it's more common.

Standard definition at my school is that to hook up is to make-out. I personally feel that hooking up means anything past just making out. Making out-plus, you might say lol.

drunkenly making out (and anything beyond) with someone is hooking up definitely. I've heard of it only being third base and beyond occasionally though. I usually consider it anything from a single to a home run though.

I'd say it can be making out, having sex or anything in between as long as you're not dating the other person. If you're dating it's no longer hooking up. Like if I was like "Brittney hooked up with Josh at that party" the next question asked would be "oh what happened?" and I'd describe how far they went.

I've heard it applied to a number of things:
-getting a plate appearance (aka going on a date)
-hitting either a double or triple
-hitting a homer
-connecting a VCR to a TV

I use "hook up" to mean making out or more, even if the people are dating/a couple.

e.g.:

"I thought Bob was seeing the movie with us..."
"He is! He's four rows behind us, hooking up with his girlfriend."

"How come you got a detention?"
"I got caught hooking up with my girlfriend in the teacher's lounge."

"Man, I haven't hooked up with anyone in so long"
"That must suck."
"Yeah, it does. You're lucky you've got a boyfriend; you can hook up all the time."
