Amen.. i would be going nuts right now without this thread. bah.. i hate to get my hopes up only to have them get dashed again but i feel so much better after this thread. especially since my grades followed the same sort of trend as yours, dande, and I was super worried they wouldn't like the drop in grades. but yeah.. i feel so much more hopeful :) Ahhh seven days to finding out i can't wait!

im glad you guys are keeping the faith! :)

and cindy i totally know what you mean. I kept thinking in my head "well, i have this and i did this and i loved this part of my application and i think it is just what they want!" and then i said "well they have sooo many perfect applicants etc etc i have no shot" so i understand getting your hopes up and then coming back to "reality". but HEY i felt the same way!

just keep talking and keep busy and im sure the week will fly by. if you were deferred, it was for a REASON. so know that they liked what they saw. chances are, since we are not ED, they will like what they see even MORE now that it is a less competitive pool. so just remember that. :)

ahhhhhhhh. whenever i go to bed, all i can think about is cornell >_<

this is a very helpful thread. for those of you that believe in a gut feeling, i have that with cornell. think my s will be waitlisted. he has better stats than some that have already been admitted but he has put more into his part-time job than in ecs and i think it will hurt him. for all reading these threads that are 10th or 11th graders, listen......find any ec and become a leader in it. I mean an ec that you like or are interested in. because my s loves his job and is considered the most mature, reliable employee they have but i just think schools don't value employment as much as an ec? any feedback?

It's true that schools might not value the part-time job as much as a school- or community-related extracurricular, but if your son has done a good job of describing his job, what it has done for him and why it is important, I think you might be just fine.

Good comments! Ivy schools are very interest in an applicants ability to take all the opportunities available to that person. If an applicant must work to make extra incomes to helping his/her family, then paid work experiences are very saleable for his/her admission regardless he/she has any ECs. However, if an applicant does not demonstrate that the extra incomes are vital for his/her family survival but may be viewed as merely for gas, cars, clothes, make up, hobby etc. The value from the paid work will not go to far in the admission process. If such a person has little or no Ecs, then the applicant may present a poor perception on his/her character of being lack of the spirits and willingness to serve the community/society, which is very important to the admission committees.

agreed. I think my sister was waitlisted at her top three schools simply because her application said she had these really strong interests etc in English etc yet she didnt demonstrate that through any ECs of serious significnance.

find something you are passionate about, and do EVERYTHING YOU CAN with that. :)

I'd say working can outweigh clubs and a few other ECs a lot of the time though. In my area, having a job in high school makes you stand out quite a bit, since EVERYONE is in a club (and a lot of clubs don't do much).

Having a job shows dedication and time-management skills. You can also get a rec form your employer to write about your work ethic.

"Hope after deferral?"

Yeah right, more Limbo...Option tranfer.

It just doesnt seem to end, nor the disappointment. Another year to wait... Just how many deferrals really got accepted?

I was a deferral turned transfer option as well.. But I must say, I personally think it's much better than a Waitlist, because at least we know we're guaranteed a spot so long as we don't let our grades drop. It's a good motivation for me to keep working really hard in college, and it gives me a chance to save a little money.. I'm just glad I didn't get rejected! Though an acceptance would have been nice...

As much as I would have loved a acceptance, with my grades, I'm very happy with a deferral turned transfer. Now I just hope that it's a one year transfer, and not a two!

was deferred ED and was accepted RD, wow I was not expecting to be accepted. There is hope after deferral. The letter of continued interest that also updated some of my recent achievements, that cc recommended sending, no doubt was beneficial, and I recommend anyone who is deferred next year who is reading this sends such a letter.

If it's a 1 year GT, I am more than happy with it. It's great!

deferred ed, and now im waitlisted...this is the longest wait of my life (in my mind, waitlist = prolonged rejection)

so heartbroken =(

deferred and rejected. after all the positive feedback i got from them i don't think it's very fair, but what can you do. applied for architecture, i know it's a small program so they can't make room for everyone. but i got into my other first choice, and am looking forward to the next five years of architecture school.

it'll all work out - hell, it already has :) good luck to everyone else.

afchang23,

Don't worry too much about getting waitlisted. If you applied early decision and got deferred, chances are the Hotel school is gonna give you a preferred transfer, which is a guaranteed transfer for the spring semester. Thats what I got, and now I'm here at Cornell after 1 semester at another college. Don't be so heartbroken. There's still hope. :)

Please dont get me wrong, I am really pleased I am given another chance... it is just the wait...

I keep thinking to myself, "Good things come to those who wait."

I sure hope there is some truth to that, but hope it doesnt take 2 years.

Huzzah, mine was for just 1 year. I can't wait for Fall of 09! Any word on whether yours is a 1 year or 2 year yet?

nope, i just got "waitlisted," they said nothing about a transfer
