Hopeless machiavellian needing essay advice

Faced with the monumental task of writing my college application essays, I feel like an a-hole. I reflected for 5 minutes and I can conjure up are instances where i was being an opportunistic, mercenary bastard looking for a way to a lucrative, (though rewarding/satisfying too) career. Yes, there have been circumstances where I am ACTUALLY proud of myself, but i can think up a lot of BAD instances where i showed absolute no scruples in the pursuit of my ends. I am Machiavellian.

I am motivated, i don't take crap from people, i work extremely hard, i am compassionate when i choose to be. These themes seem SOO simple and SOOO trite that I would not want to base my essay off of these themes.

Or are they enough?

Well, I'm not sure I understand what you're asking exactly... but if you're wondering whether basing an essay around the themes of "I am motivated, i don't take crap from people, i work extremely hard, i am compassionate when i choose to be", then I'd agree those are either boring or boorish.

I have never thought of the essays as being best written as little Ruminations On ME. Better to write about something other than yourself, but writing about it in a way that reveals something about who you are, how you think, how you see the world.

That's just my opinion, though. I have read some sample essays where students wrote very interestingly about themselves, but that feels like a delicate line to walk.

First, i want to kind of say that i don't feel like there are many good qualities to me that are worth talking about in an essay, because i'm too selfish at times. While i know that you really can't help with that, i guess i want to know is what you consider are your best characteristics and how did you decide that those were qualities you DEF possess and can work with in an essay. I hope that made sense.

And oh no, i'm not talking about writing an essay where I say, I'm this and that. I meant like describing one of my experiences where the UNDERLYING themes are "I am motivated, i don't take crap from people, i work extremely hard, i am compassionate when i choose to be".
