Hi fellow College Confidential members, I am currently a high school sophomore in an urban magnet high school. I am aiming to get into Columbia University as part of the Class of 2021 but as everyone knows Ivys are extremely hard to get into. Are there any recommendations that you guys can make based on my current situation so that my chances of getting in are slightly higher?
Current GPA:3.89
Classes I am taking now: CP Chemistry, Spanish III, Honors English II, Web Design, Honors US History I, Honors Algebra II
Classes I am taking next year: Not sure yet. I applied for the two AP classes, AP Lit and AP Chem. Got into both. Also applied for the iB program and got accepted. Leaning towards iB because it gives a higher boost on my GPA. There is no way to rank high in our school without taking iB and I understand that class rank plays a role in admissions too.
Extracurricular: Volunteer throughout the community (planting trees in my school, distributing prom dresses to those who can’t afford it, volunteering at the hospital), began playing ice hockey at the beginning of my sophomore year, was a debater during freshman year (but wasn’t very good at it and discontinued. not sure if I should rejoin), and have been working/helping in my parent’s restaurant for 11 years now (7 days a week and 364 days a year including after school and weekends. I practically live there.).
Programs attended: Rutgers Mini Med Program, NJIT FPS-Chemistry
Attendance: Never missed a day of school in my entire life (even that time when I got pink eye. Thanks mom.)
Class rank: From freshman year:40/196
Current family situation: low middle class
Race: Asian (Chinese) -__-
Gender: Female
Hi! I’m the same grade you’re in and also want to go to an Ivy. We’re pretty similar in terms of rank and GPA at the moment. I don’t see anything worth nitpicking and quite frankly I don’t think I’m in the position to do so because we’re in the same boat, but you seem like you’re on the right track! Good luck
I’m basically in that grade and i too hope to get into an ivy league school , hopefully Harvard though i don’t do 34 extracurricular’s and speak the tongue of a native tribe in rural Asia nor have i ever set up a life saving charity for the people of Kazakhstan, now i know what you’re thinking how typical average people condescendingly judging the college system and perpetuating these ridiculous stereotypes that you have to be some kind of amicable cyborg to get into an ivy league college now that’s not what i’m saying, though at the same time it is. i’m trying to learn Italian though i’m not sure if that’s iconoclastic or cultured enough, i might take up a sport like polo (i’ll just need to find macro first) yeah but i’m hoping to get in on accounts of my enthralling personality…that i’m working on i’m usually rather shy in social settings but i converted my semester grades to get my gpa and i scored a 6.4 out of 7 that sounds good, though i haven’t been able to compare much online. I was really shocked when i saw people were already inquiring about the classes of 2021 i thought i was the only one. well anyways god luck to you all.
@HsierraH On an advice forum, you should really post in actual sentences and use caps and punctualization. Your stream of run on sentences make it less likely anyone will read your thoughts and reply in a meaningful manner.
