Horatio Alger Scholarship

Does anyone know when decisions will be released? The deadline was October 25 but it didn't say when they would announce finalists or anything.

My nephew got a phone call today, but unfortunately we weren’t home. We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out!

Catie33 how did you know that it was from the Horatio Alger Scholarship?

We know it was from the Horatio Alger Scholarship because the person left a message saying that she was calling about the HA Scholarship and asking for my nephew to call her back. He tried to do that at 5:00 CST tonight, but the office closed at 5:30 EST. He’ll have to try tomorrow! I’ll post again tomorrow about his status.

You can try going to the website and click on “accepting scholarship” and try your email and password and see if you can get in. Let us know if that works for anyone.

We just tried that, and looks like he’s a winner of a National Scholarship! At least when he logs on, he sees the following message along with some documents to click on and complete. So excited!!!

National Scholars Conference
Online Checklist and Timeline
Online confirmation due by January 23, 2013

Congratulations on the award of your scholarship. There are four parts to this form that must be completed in order to accept your scholarship.
Once all four sections are completed (shown by a green “Completed” next to the item), a “Finalize Acceptance” button will appear below. That must be clicked in order to finish
and officially accept your scholarship. You may return to this page at any time until January 23, 2013. All scholarships must be accepted by that time.

Congratulations catie33! Great news! Glad it worked! So hoping my niece would get this - don’t think so - her login did not work :frowning: Glad for you!

Do they notify everyone who made the cut for nationals on the same day? What time was it? I’m getting nervous. If the “accept scholarship” button is available, does that mean you have it?

I don’t know if they notify every winner on the same day. That would be a lot of phone calls to make on one day, so it would seem to me that it would be reasonable to expect that they’d spread it out over a few days. But, I really don’t know. The call came in for my nephew at about 3:45 CST (4:45 EST) today 1/3. As for the “Accept Scholarship” button, judging from MaterMia’s response about her niece, I’d think that the button appears on everyone’s page but that the winners are actually able to log in when they press that button and get the message that I described in my earlier post while the non-winners’ logins don’t work. But, again, they may be rolling out responses over several days so I wouldn’t give up hope!

Thank you so much. Pray for me tonight. Haha, was the email at the same time as the call?

Tried the log in didn’t work. Congrats to those who got it :)

I’m going to wait until they update the list of recipients.

Quickerthanswift,

There was no email notification. The message I describe is seen after clicking the “Accepting Scholarship” green button that appears on my nephew’s Horatio Alger Scholarship log in page. He logged in at Horatioalger.org, and then was able to see the green “Accepting Scholarship” button. After clicking on that button, a new log in screen appeared, and he was able to log in and get the winner message that I described in post #6 above. Hope this helps. Good luck to all!!

Are only national level finalists being notified?

Doctarini,

I don’t know for sure, but based on the following response that appears to an FAQ on the HA site, I’d assume that they notify state winners as well. This is what it says on the HA site:

When are the winners notified? Are applicants who have not won also notified?
Only awardees will be notified personally. Everyone may view the names of the recipients when they are posted online in January.

The list is up. Congrulations to all who made it to finals! When do they announce state scholars and who do I check to see the date for my state?

This is all the website says:
The Horatio Alger Association is pleased to announce the following 2013 scholars. Additional scholars will be announced later in January.

Is the $20,000 renewable over 4 years? The woman called me and said it was, stating that they would give me $80,000 for a 4 year bachelor degree. That doesn’t sound right honestly, because that’s a lot of money they would have to give away

just found out I’m a national scholar! It’s $4,000 every year for 5 years.

I got the call Thursday and an email today (well yesterday actually) and I am a national scholar, and I think the only one from my state
I’m so excited
