Horrible Freshman GPA

I just finished freshman year and my averaged GPA was about 3.4 by the end of it. However, before this year I have never had a GPA below 3.7. :/ I guess the transition into highschool, my lack of effort in the beginning of the year, and my 30 day absence from school (family vacation to Europe and Africa) right before midterms took a major toll on my grades. But my GPA did get progressively better throughout the year (First marking period: 3.0, then 3.3, then 3.7, then 3.7). I ended the year with all my academic classes have a B-, B, B+, or A-. :/
My schedule for Sophomore Year is:
Honors Algebra II
PE 10
Honors Biology
ACP English 10
Lunch I & II
Spanish 3 (would be Honors but there was a min. absence requirement :( )
Accounting I
ACP U.S. History

[And my school course levels are CP, ACP, Honors, AP, so ACP is just average)

Have I already tarnished my chances at universities like Duke and Notre Dame? And what do you reccomend I do to salvage my GPA?

^bump, I really would appreciate some responses!

Just focus on getting straight As for the rest of your high school career. Colleges are not evil and they will see a bad freshman year, but steadily increasing grades after (hopefully). Also, get involved in community service and a few serious clubs now to show commitment. Basically, just don’t get lazy!

I’m going to try my best next year to not be lazy! Also I am very involved in the community with clubs and volunteering. Does anyone have an opinion on my schedule?

What type of colleges are you trying to get into? A lot of colleges don’t even consider freshmen year, however, they will look at your class rank. So if you’re not in the top 10% of your class try to take some online classes over the summer to boost your rank.

I looking into colleges such as Duke and Notre Dame and I believe they take cumulative GPA into serious consideration and my freshman GPA puts a serious downer on that :(

Your GPA is actually not that bad; and as long as you get straight A’s from now on it prolly won’t be a problem because their will be a continuous upward trend showing that you are capable of getting yourself up.

Can I just ask why you’re taking lunch I & II? Is that two lunch periods or…?

But I would say as long as you get straight A’s from here on you still have a good shot. Just show them a super positive upward trend.

^I’m in Lunch 5, it’s a advanced class. :D

I take IBH Lunch. It’s quite a difficult course, but with practice you can get good at it. Hopefully I can get a 7.

Haha, no. Lunch I & II means semester one and semester two. It’s a requirement to have a lunch all year and part of my schedule.

Just get all A’s throughout the rest of high school and your grades will compensate for your freshman GPA. Seeing as now, you have a 3.0, 3.3, 3.7, and 3.7, that averages out to a 3.4. So lets say that:

Sophomore: 4.0, 4.0, 4.0, 4.0
Junior: 4.0, 4.0, 4.0, 4.0
Senior: 4.0, 4.0, 4.0, 4.0

Then that would average out to a 3.86. Usually, and I emphasize usually, a 3.75+ is perfect for college admissions.
