Hospitality/hotel administration

I am just curious to know why do you guys choose to study hotel administration? i just feel appealled by the idea of being a hotelier. However, on a second thought, from what i heard is tt hospitality industry does not make lot of money comparing to other businesses. Also, hoteliers have to do basic job like waiters for years before they can become a successful manager. Is it really a wise decision to choose hotel administration?
I'm really lost.

I chose to study hospitality because I love food and travel and I want to work with people. The suggestion that hotelies make less money is quite absurd. The average starting salary for a graduating hotelie is somewhere between 40 and 60 k. That might might be low in comparison to other majors but whatever job you enter into, you will most likely me a manager or placed in a management training program. In the long run most hotelies are very successful as it seems you are comparing success to money. Many of our alums are know presidents, ceos, etc. of very well known companies. You certainly do not spend years as a waiter but you should definitely know how to do the job before you can expect to manage a waitstaff. The curriculum at the school will prepare you for almost any business job but you'll know a hell of a lot about hospitality. Our alumni network is second to none in the industry which, with hard work, will lead you to great internships and jobs. If you have a problem waiting tables I would say the Hotel School isn't for you, you need to do your time in both front and back of house before you can just expect a management position. It seems that you are rather misinformed about the nature of a Hotel School education and I recommend you do some more research.

Hotelies have it made. They have among the highest starting salaries among any major in the Ivy League, and they blow everybody else from a non tier-1 school away with starting salary. Furthermore, their classwork isn't nearly as hard as the engineers or biology, or even the econ majors.

And hotelies don't become waiters out of college.

tgc802, thanks for such an in depth response. To me, success is more about happiness and satisfaction. But, money is certainly an important factor. Besides Cornell's school of hotel administration, I am also considering Uchicago. I will do some job attachments in hotle first in the coming holiday and see how i feel.(: Actually, my parents are not very supportive to my idea of being a hotelie. you know, it is more about serving others. They think there are many inside stories in this industry. Is that true?

Hi gomestar, haha, actually i don't mind taking hard classwork. I am used to it. (: I am a little worried tt the easiness of classwork may lag us behind ppl from other majors. (hope you don't think i m wierd....)

I don't want to insult your parents since I don't really know you or them, but that is quite foolish. I would be thrilled if my child showed an interest in attending any top institution, especially one as well recognized as the Hotel School. If they want you to be successful, they too should take a deeper look into the program. Cornell is consistently recognized at the top institution in the industry and your education here will put your resume on the top of the pile. We do serve others, as its the nature of the industry but its nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone has their limits, you just need to be assertive enough to make sure you don't get pushed around. Think about it, people pay you lots of money because your the best at what you do. How is that different from any other business? I'm not quite sure what you mean about inside stories in the industry?

I recommend you read this website if you haven't already. Why Choose the Hotel School?

Also- here is the the Class of 2007 Post grad report http://www.hotelschool.cornell.edu/students/careers/documents/2007BSPostGraduateReport-FINAL.pdf

I apologize if I come off strongly but I absolutely love this school and it is the perfect fit for me, and I think it is silly that people don't understand the difference between serving others and being a servant.

Most hotelies don't become waiters. As a matter of fact, most hotelies graduating don't even go into operations. You should really read the post graduate report posted by the previous person.

I wouldn't say hotelie classes are hard, but the core classes are alot of work (and has sorta grade deflation.) Seriously though, most hotelie actually come out doing finance (probably what I will do) or real estate. There's actually a minor offered in real estate now. So you can do hotel development, or design, or anything you really want. I recommend visiting the school. Hotel School has one of the richest and most active alum base.

To the OP,

You're wrong when you assert that hoteliers don't make money. Trust me, I have a lot of friends/family members who are strikin it rich in the hotel/restraunt industry and the last I checked Conrad Hilton, J.W. Marriott, Donald Trump don't clean toilets/serve food to people provided these are the best of the best but still it goes to show that you can make a **** load of money in the hospitality industry. Also, my ex-English teacher's husband went to the Hotel and he's done well for himself but he ain't in Hotel related field I think that its commodities and a friend's father also attended there and he's a college professor. Hope this helps, and sheds light.

I picked up so much information just by looking at this thread, I'm glad I found it.

Thank you everyone that posted here.
Especially tgc802!
