Confusing reports... help!

The hotel school seems fabulous in every imaginable way, yet I keep hearing very mixed comments about it-- that it's a place where one gets a good education but commonly graduates to start work as a waiter in a (good) hotel and you'd have to work your way up to the management levels. On the other side of the camp, you have others claiming that the courses there specifically prepare you for a management career in the real world, and it has nothing to do with the laundry, dishes etc.

I've nothing against working in a hotel and starting at the bottom, but I've always wanted to major in something related to management. And the hotel webpage does nothing(!) but prove that it offers both the hands-on and administrative aspects of the industry.

So the million dollar question-- which aspect does the school emphasize MORE on? If there's an alumnus out there who can elaborate a bit more on this it'll be great. Stats would be helpful too. Thanks beforehand!

I think many of the people on this board could vouch that I know a decent amount about the Hotel School, and I NEVER have heard of a college graduate going on to start at a waitressing position. Perhaps you're only getting part of the story -- these individuals probably went into restuarant management or ownership, which are certainly a step above waiting tables. (Which I don't look down upon, because I've done it myself.)

I have to disagree with you on the usefulness of the website. It just takes some searching to find what you're looking for.

Hotel School core curriculum:

2004 B.S. Post Graduate Report:

Right there you have a list and description of the classes you would be taking, and the second link includes everything from the various fields Hotel School students entered after graduation to their starting salaries. Were you already accepted to the Hotel School? Hope this helps!

...just curious, but, what exactly is so fascinating about a career in hotel management? is there something that i don't know about?

VERY good question slicmlic2001......i was wondering the same thing

:D What can I say, I speak for the ppl

hahahaha

That's like asking why anyone would go for a career as a molecular biologist or a chemical engineer.. or ANY field for that matter. If you can find something you have a passion for and make money doing it, why not attend a school that specializes in your area of interest? For me, I'm very interested in real estate consulting (particularly for the hospitality industry) and event planning, as I've worked with a business before. And that's my justification for my fascination with the Hotel School. lol

yeah i'm with cornellhotelie. a job nowadays is so time-consuming that it's not just something you wake up for in the morning and return from in the evening. It becomes your world, the very place you choose to be in day in, day out, and if we're talking about building a career for some 20+ years, you need the conviction to know that you're spending your time on something you value. For me it's the inter-personal nature of the hotel industry that's attractive. You're in a position to make someone's day more pleasant (although that may seem too simple and naive even) and get a good picture of the macroeconomics of the world (if you're in a mgt position).

I'm an intern at a marriott hotel right now, and that place really lives up to its "spirit to serve" culture. The people there, from the front desk to the HR dept to the cleaners, are such a happy bunch that there's a real "i'm contributing to the business" feel to the whole place. But if I start talking about my job and how delightful it is to work there, you'll never hear the end of it. All I can say to those who might not see it this way is, "Each to his own."

oh cornellhotelie, on your first reply, I gotta clarify. I was being sarcastic with "the hotel webpage does nothing(!)". :-) That place is a treasure trove and I've been living the Cornell life through the website, lol. Just that it's like when you're at a very lavish buffet spread where you're left with not knowing what to settle with, ya know? ;)

Btw, I applied RD but if I had the choice... anyway CONGRATS(albeit belated) to you for getting in!

Beautifully written, spiral_blast. With insight like that I would be INCREDIBLY shocked if you were not accepted! :) Sorry I missed the sarcasm, and I hope to see you next year! (And if you haven't already seen the second link, it's really cool, right?)

woah, I take back what I said about living n breathing the cornell cyber life. that 2nd link -is- amazing. :-) <resumes drooling="" over="" keyboard="" habit=""> </resumes>

(bad cornellhotelie, bad! I was trying to kick that disgusting habit, you know?!)
