Hotchkiss Course Selection - help me?

I was reading the Hotchkiss course guide, and I am assuming english, history, philosphy and religion are mandatory, while I chose 1 from art, dance, music, photography or theater.

What if I want to do multiple art courses, is that possible? (Studio Art, Strings/Orchestra, Voice/Choir, Photography/Film)

If it's not possible to take that many art courses.... then what other options are there? (any specific clubs i can join? taking only private classes? can i do it in my free time or will there not be enough free time?)

Within the english, history, philosophy and religion, do all preps take the same course level? Can we 'chose' one area to study?

For the other courses... how will math placement work (do i tell them which course i want to take, then do the placement exam, or other way around)? do all preps take the same science course?

If take First Year Latin for freshman year, then decide I want more 'space' for other courses, is it possible to finish the language requirement in sophomore year by taking a high level Chinese course? (I am already fluent in Chinese)

Is it possible for me to do just one year of Chinese in my freshman year, then have no language for the rest of the 3 years? (so that I can take more arts courses?)

Do I need to start planning my courses for sophomore, junior and senior year now, or is there really no need?

Sorry for asking so many questions... but I'd really appreciate if you could answer them! Thank you so much!!

by the way “and I am assuming english, history, philosphy and religion are mandatory, while I chose 1 from…” <— i’m talking about the prep humanities course. all freshmen need to take it, right…?

Also, really important question: is the Prep Humanities course counted as only 1 course? (out of the 5 that i can take?)

Thanks.

“During the 2011-2012 school year, Preps will be
required to take Humanities, a three-credit course.
In addition, Preps typically take yearlong courses in
a classical or modern language (one credit), math
(one credit), and science (one credit). As such,
Preps normally carry a six-credit load each
semester.”

So yes, the humanities sequence is required and counts for 3 class periods.

Your schedule next year will probably look like:

1-3. Prep Humanities
4. Math
5. Language
6. Science

If you really want to take an additional art class besides the one you will be doing in prep humanities then you may be able to substitute science for art since the school only requires 2 years of science. Most schools will be sending more detailed information about course selection process soon so be sure to check the mail for that.

For international students, you can sit for AP Chinese, get a 5 and thus test out of the language requirement. Call the Registar’s.

@ 2010 hopeful: I probably won’t want to drop a science course for art… is it possible to take more courses?

And yeah, Hotchkiss should be mailing around this time… though I’m not sure how long it’ll take to get to China =/

@ kisskob: If I ‘test’ out the language requirement, do I still need to take a semester/year long course, or can I not do any language for 4 years, just by passing a test?

Thank you so much guys!

I don’t think you need to take the course. Maybe you should call the school just to make sure? Most top schools I’m familiar with give intl students a choice.

Ask Mr. Woelper, he’s the dean of studies. He will probably direct you to the course registration person who sits right outside his office. I just dont remember her name
