I am kind of confused at this point whether to apply as Econ or Business Management at UCB
I have been following the Haas's prereqs and bread requirement and i will be done with the prereqs and everything both for econ and biz at UCB by next spring. My question is I am pretty sure i'll get into UCB at an econ major because w/ hard work and some effort i earned my 4.0, and I also have been active in extracurricular activities.
Recently i talked to one of my econ professors, and she said that pretty much, econ and biz majors take jobs and make similar amt of money, which is pretty understandable.
Well, here is the deal. I want to run a hotel business in the future, and I think that business management is going to be more beneficial but applying as biz is going to reduce my chance of acceptance by a whole lot.... should I just go for biz? i know my writing is a little scattered all over the place, and by you can tell that i'm all over the place on this idea....

At most colleges your professor would be right but at Cal there is a difference as far as recruiting and job placement goes for sure. But, you can still take Haas classes and join the real estate group as an econ major.

It depends on how important getting into Berkeley for Berkeley's sake is to you (econ's a safer bet) and how strong you are outside of your gpa. For Haas, a 4.0 is maybe half the battle.

-I have been a student senator for 2 years
- last year I ran for Director of Finance but lost... i don't know if effort counts
- i'm fundraising chair for AGS: i'm executing a car wash in 2 weeks and taking an active role
- I'm in publicity for Honors Transfer Club
- I presented at an Anthropology Research Symposium
- I've been working at this private tutoring institution for 3 years
- the past winter I attend Youth Entrepreneurial Program, though I kinda stopped going after the 4th session out of 10 sessions

I'm trilingual.. I already wrote my essay.. my counselor says its fantastic in respect to the classes i have taken cuz it's pretty recent that I changed my major to business....
but of course I'm applying for Haas... so i never know... I mean i like econ 2... ahhh i dunno

i just realized i have become a junior member. I feel old haha

Well, when I was in your shoes I didn't give econ a second thought! You sound like you have a good shot. It's up to you, I know for me it was Haas or settle for somewhere else. Make sure you apply to at least two other UC's (three still cost the same, right?). I had a regents scholoarship for UCI that would have made the loss less painful. If you have a 4.0, you're likely to get one somewhere.

is regents scholarship a full ride? because money is pretty much the biggest factor and i might give up haas just for that.... sadly

It depends on which UC. That shouldn't be too big a factor if you're in-state for a UC. Get a federal loan. I don't think they're ever full ride, they have a lot of academic extras.

i think in hotel management, haas would be more benefitial than an econ major
unless u wanna take biz classes (which are kinda hard to get into if ur not biz major)
organizational behavior
different classes in management
HR management
and probably accounting
these classes would probably be most beneficial
i got a friend thats going into hotel management as well so atleast thats what he told me

if u can convey ur passion for ur passion for the hotel biz industry well, i really think u would have a good shot. cuz it sounds like u know about it and probably could have a "wow" factor in ur essay.
remember this, no guts no glory ^ - ^

thank u all for your comments
now i'm gonna stick with my original plan and hopefully
see some of you next fall haha
