Has anyone stayed at the Ramada Lake Shore? It seems to be the closest hotel to the campus and has a good rate for U of C visitors. I will be flying and do not want to rent a car. Is this a convenient location? How long does it take to walk to campus?

Your really have four options. The Ramada (already mentioned) is very far away and not a very good hotel. Nearer to campus is the Wooded Isle Suites (already mentioned). You can also try International House, which is on campus. It is set up like a dormitory, with bathrooms down the hall. It is good and cheap. Lastly, you can call and try to get into the Quadrangle Club. It is very convenient. I think they would probably let you stay if they are not booked. The rooms are old and ok - the whole place is in need of renovation.

I have stayed at the Ramada Inn Lakeshore and I would only rate it as okay. It is a bit run down and it is a pretty good walk from the campus, so I would not want to walk to the school from there in bad weather. However the rates for U of C affiliated people are pretty reasonable and there are very few choices anywhere else within a two mile radius of the campus. I have also stayed at International House, which is right on campus and is very nice. The rates are really cheap, but you do have to share a bathroom, so if that would bother you, then don't consider it. I have also hear that Stoney Island Suites are pretty nice, but pricier than the Ramada Inn.

Thank you, these are helpful comments. I had a hunch the options were limited close to the University. You've now given me a few good places to investigate.

Hey, my family and I are going to the May 14 open house. Can we stay in the I-house? I thought that you needed to be University affiliated to do that (ie. visiting prof, student, ect.) And the Isle Suits, does anyone know how much a 3 night stay for 3 people is there?

EDIT:
