Any recommendations regarding where to stay that is close to campus when we visit?
We have stayed at the Biltmore-very nice with two king beds and a separate area with a couch and table and desk. I’ve also stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn which is less expensive but not a suite (and it’s not as close to Brown). The Marriott was a disappointment- very dark and gloomy.
Your best bet is anything in the downtown Providence area (downtown is very small). It’s a 15 minute walk or so up to Brown (up a BIG hill though!) or you could take a taxi or Uber. If you’ll have a car, you could stay in Warwick - it’s about a 10 minute drive from Brown (everything is very close in RI) and would probably be cheaper.
Hampton Inn & Suites Providence Downtown is just down the hill from Brown - a very short walk to campus. http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels/rhode-island/hampton-inn-and-suites-providence-downtown-PVDWYHX/index.html
If you’re a parent, you can join the Brown faculty club which allows you to stay at the Hope club on campus. http://www.hopeclub.com/Default.aspx?p=DynamicModule&pageid=313071&ssid=202682&vnf=1
If you go to Brown’s website and look at the information for those visiting campus - there are hotels listed and it says that you can get a discount of you tell the hotel you are visiting Brown! That Hampton Inn mentioned above is nice. Kinda pricey though.
Thanks, everyone!
I’ll check out all these options.
I forgot to mention Hilton Garden Inn has a Brown friends and family rate.
@arwarw Maybe I’m just missing it…I can’t see on that link for the Hope club, where it says that it has recirprocity with the Faculty club (if that is the deal). Is there another link that would help me?
Hotel Providence was very nice and the “Brown” rate they offered was really good!
Pawtucket is also a good cheaper option, especially if you’re visiting on a busy weekend
There used to be some ‘hotel’ rooms on campus, in the new dorm across from the Grad Center. I can’t remember what they named that dorm (New Dorm?). Don’t know if those are still there/available or not. Agree with all that all downtown hotels are walking distance. The Marriott Courtyard is close – someone said dark and gloomy. Don’t confuse the Courtyard Marriott with the “Downtown” Marriott – the “Downtown” Marriott is not actually downtown. The Courtyard is the one that’s downtown. Maybe it was a cloudy day? But at least from the outside, and lobby, it’s very nice and very close to the Prov. Place Mall and lots of good dining and only about a 20 minute walk to campus. Use common sense walking after dark. Just googled – Old Court bed and breakfast is actually on College Hill, less than 10 minutes walk to campus. It’s in an old courthouse, which is a very nice building on historic Benefit Street. There is one other Bed and Breakfast listed in a Google search of the East Side, but I don’t know anything about it.
There is no link. I did everything via phone calls to both the faculty club and the hope club after the advice from another parent.
@arwarw Thanks! I emailed both and have the information I need! Is there a place to get meal/food pricing at the Faculty Club? I’m trying to determine whether it would be useful and affordable for me to eat there with my daughter during visits. Or, even the price of a cake if i want to send her one for a special occasion!
@profdad2021 I’ve never dined at the falcuty club, but they send me a few newsletters a year touting meal specials. I can’t recall the pricing.
Our stay at the Hope Club did include a modest continental breakfast.
When we have visited our daughter we’ve needed the flexibility to eat at odd hours to accommodate her schedule. So, the falculty club hours haven’t worked for us. Maybe one day before she graduates!
There are so many fantastic restaurants in Providence, I’d recommend not eating at the faculty club.
We went to Waterman’s Grill, Hemenway’s and Los Andes for various dinners. All were fantastic.
Good advice.
The Duck & Bunny is a fun place for dessert and coffee. http://www.theduckandbunny.com/
Also, just off Thayer is La Creperie, a good spot for a quick, tasty, inexpensive breakfast http://creperieprov.com/
The Duck and Bunny is SO cute. Love the paintings. We went for Sunday brunch last summer and it was great.
