I'm going to be visiting Brown in February but I'll be travelling alone and without a car. I looked on the website and they listed some accommodations. The Inn looks good because it's right on campus but it's $110 per night for one person (I called this morning). Is there anything within walking distance, or an easy/quick bus ride, to campus that might be cheaper?

Can you do an overnight with a student, or do they only have that once you are accepted? That would be best in many ways, not to mention cheapest :).

call Brown and ask them to suggest a cheaper place near campus that is within your price range--there are many hotels in providence including the standard marriot, holiday inn, etc., but i'm not sure what the rates are

Thanks. I didn't know if I could just called Brown and ask them to do it for me. I'm not even sure they'll have the rates on hand. Although hopefully they'd know which are the closest places and which aren't.

I'm not sure you'll be able to find anything in a hotel that's cheaper than $110/night -- that's a good rate for Providence, and you will be staying right on campus. There might be cheaper motels in Seekonk or Pawtucket, but those would require a car.

Maybe you could post a question in the Brown forum here, or on its livejournal group, asking if a current student would be willing to put you up for a night.

The Days Inn (in the Fox Point neighborhood) is likely to be relatively inexpensive and is within (longish) walking distance. Otherwise, the Pawtucket/Seekonk option is your best bet pricewise. There are a couple of bed and breakfast places near Brown's campus, but I imagine their rates are higher than you'd prefer to pay.

I would go with the Inn at Brown despite the high rate. I've stayed there a number of times. It's not very grand, but it's extremely convenient. I would not recommend trying to walk from Fox Point (Days Inn) at night. You can, of course, take a taxi.

If you decide to try priceline.com, look on biddingfortravel.com first under hotels and rhode island. They show lists of the hotels that are usually available for each level (4* etc.) You can't pick what hotel you want, but you can at least get an idea if the hotels would be in Brown's neighborhood and you can read reviews from people who've stayed there.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn at the foot of the Hill when I went for Parent's Weekend. It was a quick, fairly cheap taxi ride, but I got rides to Brown twice from the hotel's airport shuttle folks. You might want to check to make sure they still HAVE the shuttle, though, as I heard a rumor that they might have cancelled that service. I paid a pretty huge chunk of change to come parent's weekend, but the rates go up that weekend. Not sure what it costs usually.

I just called The Brown Inn and they don't allow anyone to stay there under the age of 25 without a parent or guardian. That is crazy! I'm 22! I'm just going to call Brown on Monday and ask about really close hotels.

i don't know how close brown is to johnson and wales, (center city providence) but j and w has often told me to call brown if I needed housing etc. (what great helps aren't they). anyway, johnson and wales usually has host hotels, and they typically charge about 89$ a night. we always tell the hotel where we are staying that we are with j and w and we get a discount. you could call 1-800-dialjwu and ask who their host hotels are, and stay there. you just have to tell them you are visiting j and w. a little fib. we usually stay at the marriott courtyard which is right across from a really great mall in providence. and they have public transportation.

This has been discussed several times before. What typically surfaces is that you can get a room at the Radisson Providence Harbor for about $50,either through a discount website or through Priceline. We stayed there. Its adequate, but pretty basic. In a weird location, but not too terribly far from campus. Check their website first for internet deals.
