I’m going to be visiting Brown in February but I’ll be travelling alone and without a car. I looked on the website and they listed some accommodations. The Inn looks good because it’s right on campus but it’s $110 per night for one person (I called this morning). Is there anything within walking distance, or an easy/quick bus ride, to campus that might be cheaper?

Other than that, the places within an easy walk of Brown are mostly B&B's which tend to be more expensive. There are cheaper hotels on the perifery of Providence which probably have a shuttle or access to the Rhode Island busses, which are easy to use and cheap ($1.50). Even if you wanted to stay at the Brown Inn, I'm not sure if you could get reservations... I've heard it's really hard and that they're often booked long in advance.

Unfortunately I can't do an overnight as a prospective transfer. I checked out the site last week and called up admissions but unfortunately I can only do tours/info sessions/class visits (which I'll do when I visit). Maybe I'll just get up really early one day and visit for a day!

I bet if you contacted the Bruin Club directly they'd find somebody to put you up with. Otherwise, you could do it informally -- I'd be happy to put you up for a night or two but obviously you'd rather stay in an upperclassman dorm. I could find somebody who you could stay with, or maybe an upperclassman on this board could volunteer.

Wow, that is so sweet of you. I was kinda upset I couldn't do the overnight because when I spoke to a transfer admissions director he said there's no reason why I couldn't but I'd have to book it through front desk. When he put me through the woman said they don't do them. I filled out the Bruin form anyway, so hopefully someone will contact me. if not, I would love it if I could stay with a current student. I would only stay for one night, it would just be so amazing to experience proper Brown life!

Along these same lines, my S was accepted ED and we will be attending ADOCH in mid April. I have not received anything from Brown yet, but wanted to spend a day exploring Providence since when we came up for the initial tour, we only went to the college and then came home. Is there any hotels, sites, restaurants etc. that someone could recommend that would give us a convenient location and give us a flavor of Providence? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Really open to anything. Since the event doesn't start until 4 PM on Tues 4/18, we thought we would come up Monday. Is there an interesting "downtown" area of shops, restaurants etc that is fun or different? We spent a little time on Thayer St when we went up for the tour but never ventured down the hill-so where should be stay, eat and go look? We obviously have an evening and then the next day until 4 PM so would like to explore a little of Providence. Where do students go when they want to get off campus? Is there something that makes Providence truly Providence?? Anything would be helpful.

I just called The Brown Inn and they don't allow anyone to stay there under the age of 25 without a parent or guardian. That is crazy! I'm 22! I'm just going to call Brown on Monday and ask about really close hotels. (unless any female upperclassmen are part of Bruin...)

Be sure to visit Federal Hill. There are many, many good Italian restaurants in Providence. For shopping, there's Providence Place. The Biltmore is nearby, nice hotel.

Thanks for all the hotel info! That orbitz link was fab, thanks annelise. I think I may have found a b n' b within walking distance for only $5 more than the Brown Inn. I'm just hoping not too many students are going home Friday Feb 17th!

Thanks so much for all your help and suggestions. We made a reso at the Courtyard because several people mentioned it as convenient and reasonable. I will consider the restaurants etc for things to do when we get there. Once again, thanks!

The second visit we stayed at the Radisson and really loved it. Far superior to Holiday Inn. Radisson has a shuttle that will take you back and forth to the Brown campus if you don't feel like walking (or if you have luggage at the beginning and end of the trip). They have sleep number beds that are wonderful.

We have been staying at the Radisson too lately. The previous times we stayed at the Marriott which is in a nice location (close to the mall, restaurants) but charges for parking. The Radisson is very nice, cheaper and does offer the shuttle service. It is also close to Wickendon Street which has many nice restaurants and quirky shops to browse through.

Another vote for the Radisson for anyone on a budget. I booked reservations on Hotwire in Feb. and got the room "three star hotel" for $57 a night. The hotel shuttle was free and took us anywhere we wanted to go, so we explored the city as well as the university. The hotel is nothing fancy and in the middle of a construction zone, but we were never there except at night.
