Going to orientation in July and looking to book a hotel. I know there are several lists of hotels that the university posts but was wondering if anyone has a recommendation out there? Stayed at the Hampton Inn when we visited, but would like to try another hotel. thanks

I was at orienattion for my son earlier this week and stayed at Howard johnson in Cheverly (Hyattsville) MD. The rooms were OK, but staff was very rude. I had to change rooms thrice over 2 days since something or the other did not work. Plus the neighbourhood is not so great (street signs spray painted with grafitti etc>), even though the hotel is fenced in.

I would highly recommend any of the hotels in Greenbelt, just over a 5-10 minute drive from UMD, in nice business-type neighborhoods. After trying out an assortment of Rt 1 hotels/motels for D’s 1st 2 years at UMD, (of the lot, the Quality Inn in downtown CP is the least icky), we enjoy that the Greenbelt hotels are classier and in quiet neighborhoods. As long as you have a car, they’re great. (You’ll find several on one of the travel search engines). The Marriott on Campus is great, but there’s only been one time that I’ve gone up there that their rates weren’t sky high. Our “usual” place for the last year or so is the Holiday Inn Greenbelt.

We either stay at the Marriott on campus or the Holiday Inn on Route 1 in front of IKEA. Had bad luck twice with the Courtyard by Marriott in Green Belt. If you (or your parents?) plan to attend Family Weekend in October, book a room now. We’ve had our reservation for months already and have also booked our rooms for commencement next spring.

I think I post this comment every time someone asks this question, lol. We stay at the Holiday Inn in Greenbelt. I use Hotwire to book the rooms and I’ve never paid over $84 a night, usually I get it for $59/night. Hotwire does not let you see the hotel before you book but if you search for hotel deals in the College Park area, it will come up as a three-star hotel in Greenbelt, six miles from campus. They just remodeled in the last year and it’s convenient.

We were up there over Memorial Day weekend. The best online price I could find was $109.99 plus taxes per night at the Holiday Inn in Greenbelt. Travelocity now has a Hotwire-like feature where it offered me a 3-star hotel room in Greenbelt. (it’s not changeable/refundable, so like Hotwire, you have to commit). Anyway, our room was $50.60 plus taxes. We were wary that there might be additional fees but there weren’t!!! We have stayed at the Courtyard in Greenbelt and had no issues (see worrywart’s note above), but I assume this is one of the 3-star hotels that you could potentially get. We’re sold on the process!!!
