We're heading down next month and I'm looking for hotel recommendations in the College Park area. On our last visit we were staying in DC, but I'm looking for closer lodgings this time.

This is a good website…full range of places to stay

The place on campus is certainly the most convenient, but generally very pricey. If you have a car, we’ve found the best luck with hotels in Greenbelt (just east of College Park)…in a corporate area, including NASA–Goddard, and generally much nicer than any of the other College Park choices.

My mother and I stayed at the Holiday Inn by Ikea a few times. Never any problems, plus you’ll be right in the area students will be living in for the next four years. UMD is just a straight shot down Rt. 1 or they have a shuttle to take you to campus or to Greenbelt Metro station if you want to pop into DC.

Simalot, are you headed to admitted students day 4/8? DD is headed down (w/ me for company) and will stay in the dorms the night before…Haven’t even seen UMD yet but she is now talking like it’s her front-runner

Thanks all for the info.

kbiresearch, yes, we’ll be there on 4/7 for engineering day and 4/8 for the students’ day. We don’t really have a front-runner right now; it’s a neck-and-neck-and-neck-and-neck race, with a month for one to get to the finish line first. I guess it’s a lot better than being without a ride. We really liked what we saw of the campus on our earlier visit. Son’s planning on staying in the dorms the night of 4/7.

AVIOD HOTELS ON RT. 1 AT ALL COSTS!!! The area gets very seedy after dark and it is not the safest or nicest to stay at some of those hotels. My best advice for you would be to look around the area like silver spring or greenbelt or even in wash. My brother just graduated and I have been accepted so my family and I are down in the area all the time. We usually stay at a residence inn in silver spring. It’s about a 5-10 min ride from campus, its off rt.1, its clean and serves breakfast. I know staying on rt. 1 is most likely the cheapest and most easily accessable but it is really not worth it. If you have any other questions feel free to message me!
