Are there good hotels near South Campus if visiting? It seems most of the hotel suggestions I get are near North Campus.

Walking distance would be great, since I don't know the parking situation there. Also, do people use taxis easily in Buffalo, or do you have to drive and repark every time you go to a new area of the city or campus?

In most cities where we've visited campuses so far, we have not used our car in town.

We had no problem finding parking on North or South campus though a current student can tell you better.

I do not think there are hotels within walking distance to South. There are many hotels very close to North campus. I suppose you can get to North and take the shuttle to South. Parking in and around Buffalo (city) was fine to. It’s nice to have the car to drive around Amherst and Buffalo to see what is around and go to restaurants.

Agree, I would stay near North and commute to South (via UB bus or car). The hotel selection is much better in Amherst and, if you’re just doing a college visit, it’s likely that North campus will have most of what your student wants to see. The Ramada is within walking distance to Ellicott and in a quiet area. The hotels near Flint Entrance are a bit farther away. Also, the area near South is rather sketchy at night. The subway is in front of South campus and will take you downtown (it’s one line only, so no worries about which to take) if you don’t care to drive.

Parking is a big issue during the weekdays, on north anyway. However, if it’s for a tour or admissions, generally they give you a pass to park in the paid visitor lot, which has spaces as students can’t park there.

There is a small motel at Main/Bailey right across from south - but honestly I’d stay in a hotel near north and drive to south - it only takes 10 minutes. Comfort Inn/Hotel Indigo/Mariott have easy access to Millersport which is the road to south.

You can take the metro rail downtown from south - gives you limited access to the city, goes to most of the main parts. I’d drive though for most places - driving isn’t bad in Buffalo unless you’re doing it from 4-6, but even then it’s not awful unless you’re on the major interchanges. The entire area is very easy to get around by car.

You can’t hail a taxi in Buffalo, you need to call for one.

APU, if you really want to avoid driving (and don’t mind not seeing the mall/shopping district, Niagara Falls, etc), your best bet would be to stay at the Ramada on N. Forest Road. It’s within walking distance (about 5 minutes) from the Ellicott Complex, which is clearly visible from the hotel if your room faces that direction. The Ramada offers a discount for UB Parents (mention this when you book, it was around $75 last summer) and includes a decent continental breakfast in their rate. You might ask if they offer an airport shuttle. Their rooms have recently been remodeled and I was happy with my stay there.

The Res Life offices and various classrooms, study centers, dining options, and departments are on the ground floor of Ellicott. You can walk to the main part of the campus from there (another 10 min or so) or the UB shuttles run continuously and stop in Ellicott’s underground tunnel, which is clearly visible from the parking lot/sidewalk for Wilkeson (the side closest to the Ramada). The shuttle stop is at the other end of Ellicott though, so you’d have to walk through the tunnel as they will not stop for you at the other end! Just hop on and it will take you to the Academic Spine (and other places such as Governor’s dorm). You can catch a UB bus to South campus from the spine - the bus stop is in a loop near Starbucks, in the Commons. Lots of info about the shuttles, etc. on their website and people are always willing to help there. Hope you have a great visit!
