Hello! Who do they determine to go to the South Campus of SUNY Buffalo? I'm going into the Medical field, and I heard they have a Medical School at the South Campus. I was wondering because I heard the surrounding area of the SC is really dangerous with the high crime rates.

Housing is first come, first served so get the deposits in quickly and put down the North campus dorms for your choices.

Since they recently (this past year) opened up a new sophomore only dorm on North campus, I would expect that Ellicot (freshmen dorm) and Governers have more spots available.

That said, my son deposited late and knew he’d end up on South campus. The bus back and forth for classes was fine. The dorm and everything else on South was fine too. South Campus, though heading in one direction off the campus does have a high crime rate (I think the frats and there!!) it has great public transportation, right across from shopping/movie theater. I think the kids on South really liked it. I know my son and the friends he made on South moved to North together the next year, just for the proximity to classes. IT really is not as bad as you imagine and the kids on South really do like it a lot!!

Thank you so much for the info! I contacted UB, and they told me the same. When would be the best time to turn in the deposits? They also said I would be able to do it online as well?

The only reason why I wouldn’t want to go to South Campus is because I heard that the crime was extremely bad there.

Bad is a relative term. What would YOU consider bad in terms of crime rates etc? Would you just not want to live there or would you not even want to go to classes there?

For an example, I heard that someone could hear frequent gun shots at night. I wouldn’t mind going to classes there, but I prefer to live on the North Campus.

South campus is not surrounded by bad areas, it is just at the fringe part heading into the nicer, more residential areas. There is the shopping center across the street in one direction and a golf course in the other.

When my sons and his friends went out at night, they went in groups and knew not to head out alone. There are plenty of kids in the area (inexpensive off campus housing for rent and frats sorority houses) and police presence, but also a bad element. It’s easy enough to avoid those areas. Other than the initial (Fall semester) groups heading out to find parties, the kids stayed in together most of the time. (North campus living… outings were generally shopping of food/restaurant related.)

My son rec’d a phone call, the summer before starting UB, from an Honors Student welcoming him to UB. I questioned her about South campus. She said she deposited late as well (decisions, decisions) and was placed on South campus and stayed there the next year loving it! I felt better about it.

I am a worrisome Mom (putting it mildly) and was very happy moving my son into South campus. Definitely more to do off campus (without transportation) than on North campus.

UB has great sciences and science programs.

Try the ACT. It is a much easier test (at least for my sons) than the SAT and every school accepts it. If you do well on it you do not have to send the SAT scores at all!!! It has a science section as well so it may be the right test for you!

PM me any questions you have or post them on the SUNY UB thread as I read that.

Crazed, thank you so much for all the info. If I have any questions, I’ll make sure to PM you. Quick question though, do you know when I should start on my application?

If you can get your app out in October, that would be wonderful. If you can get most out by the end of November, that’s fine too. I think you have until the middle of January or so in general.

You can’t start the application until it comes up in the common app or SUNY apps and I don’t know the date. Things you can do… get your resume completed. (My sons did it on the computer, printed and sent it in to schools separately.) Speak to teachers you are getting your recommendations from. Let them know you want them to write one for you that way you can give them your list of schools, etc early in the Fall. Make a chart this summer of all the things you need to do in the Fall so you can check them off as you complete them (request transcripts from HS, pay to send ACT’s SAT’s, fill out applications, send checks or pay by credit card to each school, recommendations, guidance counselor rec, financial aid applications, send resume, etc…)

I hopefully will send my application out during the beginning of November because I need to retake the SAT in October, and it takes a while for the scores to come back.

Wait, so I need to send a resume in as well? Another question, do I have to send everything at the same time, or can I send them separately?

Thinking about college makes me so nervous!

The school sends in their parts and you send in yours (application, fees…) If you have many extra curriculars, honors, awards, etc, then you can type up and send a resume, otherwise it will all be on the application. IF you haven’t already, start the resume and record everything you’ve done from 9-12 grade as far as honors, awards, activities, clubs, volunteering. List them by category, then years involved, You will need this for your application and this way it will be all ready to add 12th grade and transpose to the application. See if you can find an application online to give you an idea what they look like and what info you need. Other than the essays, these parts likely do not change year to year.
