House assignments are out...

Lots of disappointment here…not sure they actually read his request form.

My kid and his roommate (requested) got their second choice and are feeling pretty fortunate after reading in the FB group about what’s happening. Many kids not getting anything they requested, even ED1 deposits. Has to be related to overcrowding, I would imagine?

Where are they putting everyone? How can someone not get first choice after submitting ED1 deposit?

Dunno but that’s the word on the street. Lots of kids in the class fb group reporting as such. My kid is on an international flight so he is useless to me today as a source of intel, but I have been checking in with his roommate periodically and that’s what he’s telling me he is seeing.

Son said a bunch of kids on FB asking to trade from I House. Another mom upset her freshman got Stoney…

Also hearing about lots who requested doubles getting singles and vice versa.

Is this disappointment just among new dorm choices - ie requested North but ended up in I-House - or does this also apply to those who requested BJ?

Unfortunately I don’t have information that is as specific as that. As I said, my kid is not here so I am only getting bits and pieces as I talk to his roommate. But what he is telling me is that there are a lot of kids in the group who are discussing how their assignments don’t seem to match their requests at all. For example, listing being a double as number one priority and then being put in a single. It also sounds like there are a ton of kids whose assignments are not in their top three choices.

Maybe a lot of gap years? Maybe athletes and other likely letters? Both groups can submit their deposit b4 ED1

I’m sorry, @caymusjordan that your son didn’t get any of his top choices. That stinks. Hopefully registration for classes will give him some good surprises. Is he in I-House? Although it was a bit remote, it looked like I-House had reasonable size rooms, interesting common areas and a lot of scheduled speakers and activities; he might find it’s actually a good place once he gets there.

He just told me he talked to a student who requested a single in BJ and got a double in South. And south was not choice 2 or 3…lots of these types of stories today.

Oh, no. That is quite a difference. Single vs double and dorm that wasn’t on the list. Ouch.

We’re going to a regional UChicago send-off party tomorrow, so we may hear more about dorm assignments then.

I think that is a common story everywhere. I remember when I was a freshman 30 years ago, everyone seemed to not get their choice requests. But, it was all forgotten about 10 minutes after we got there.

When I was an undergrad we didn’t get to make requests at all. They just put us where they put us. We just filled out the personality questionnaire and took the assignment we got. On the other hand, I think if the school is going to tell them that they “almost always“ get one of their three choices, and a really large number of kids don’t get their top three choices, it’s a little bit more of a gut punch, you know?

I think the universities that make you fill out a 20 page survey about your housing preferences usually toss them out as soon as you submit it

^^Yeah, agree with @BrianBoiler – as soon as the students get to their dorms and meet their hallmates, all are forgotten.

Our daughter and her roommate got I-House double and are very disappointed. They requested to live together in: North, Max, South. Deposit made 1st week April.

Rant:
Yes, when you pay your deposit 3hours after ED1 acceptance b/c that will help get the room your son prefers…and he was very clear that he preferred a single over everything else - and to hear there are kids that were put in singles when they requested a double!

It also sucks to be paying 78k/yr and hear they over-enrolled again so housing is tight as are classes…

Can’t wait for the first person to ask for a donation to the school - they’re going to get an earful!

To my son, telling him it will be great and he’ll be fine - not so sure though.

“and he was very clear that he preferred a single over everything else - and to hear there are kids that were put in singles when they requested a double!”

If he’s hearing from those kids who were put in a single but would prefer a double, would he be able to trade with one of them to get his preferred single?

^same thought. If the single is #1 he should be able to trade with one of those in I-House at the very least.

I think the problem is going to be the volume of kids who are looking to do that.
