Hi,

We are completing the Pre-Application FAFSA worksheet and I am stumped. Maybe it will be clear when I go online, but it appears that on page 3, they ask What is the student's household size? with instructions to count the student. Then, on page 4, they ask What is the student's parents' household size? - again, with instructions to count the student!

I am speculating that maybe the online version will see that our kid is not independent and never ask the first time, or do they expect you to count them in both places?

The same question is asked for both households regarding number of college students in the household, too.

I did search here and in the archives, but didn't see anything addressing this issue, though I imagine it has been asked before....

Thanks.

If the student is a dependent then skip that question, if not then count the student in the numbers. In your case skip the question. We use the Princeton Review Paying for College Without Going Broke book . It goes through the FAFSA and Profile line by line. The page 4 question of course applies. Isn't this fun! We are in the middle of it as well

i actually had a thought about this the other day.. it doesn't pertain to fafsa or anything, but for instance at my house its my mom my dad my sister and me, as well as my aunt and her two kids that are living in our basement. my family size is 4, but does that make our household size 7? it's not like we combine our income to pay bills or anything like that...

It's not who lives in your house as much as who are dependent by IRS rule to the parents.

Thanks, Arizonamom. I figured something like that. I used that book 6 years ago for my D but figured I could manage without it this time. Glad you had it! Thanks again!

jami, so when they ask for household income, would that include My mom and my dad? or are my sister and i included in that? I am assuming my aunt and her son don't count as part of my household income.

fendergirl,
I haven't done FAFSA yet, but for PROFILE my father (the student's grandfather) was included in the family, but not as a dependent (in our case). The email help on the PROFILE is very good - btw - you just have to do it early enough to get the answers back.
