housing and financial aid question

this is something i shouldve asked a longgggggggg time ago, and i think i did but i cant seem to find it...
will i ever be able to use financial aid money to pay for off campus housing??
please say yes!!! with penn's extremely crappy housing i would love to live off campus eventually. but if i cant use fin aid money to pay for it im stuck in the crappy houses all four years. not that i am complaining about the generous amount of money they gave me but you know, just asking... thanks in advance for responding

somebody please tell me if you know about this. i am quite sure i read somewhere that i could use financial aid to live off campus but i cant seem to find where i read that and now im kinda worried

Yes you can! I don't know exactly how it works, but I definitely know people who have done it.

thank you :)
anyone else know any of the specifics??

haha extremely crappy housing?

i'd wait to give it a try first to see how you like it / where your friends want to live after freshman year

and highrises really aren't shabby now that they've been renovated (now why won't they renovate anywhere else, boo)

^ yeah hehe i was thinking off campus for junior or senior year maybe. anyways, i guess i just saw the bad side of things when i went for previews. i stayed at the high rise that isn't renovated yet and spent some time in hill. i loved the quad but unfortunately i dont get to live there (i'll be in hill this fall)
i've heard that most people live off campus eventually... idk how much of that is true so would you say there are many who live on campus all four years?

hm yeah there's quite a few who live their whole 4 years in the college house system

i'm one of them! and i've known many people, past + present, who did or are doing the same

in all likelihood you will live off campus by junior or senior year. most people do, although of course there are exceptions. i would recommend it. you can share a off-campus house for what you'd pay to live in the high rises and that allows so much more freedom. plus hill is gross and kings court is gross, the quad is weird if youre not a freshman, stouffer/mayer are generally kinda weird, and do you really want to spend 3 years in the high rises?

andy_g, specifics are that your FA award is based on anticipated costs. PENN uses on campus housing as its basis for awarding FA, but you can use the money to pay to live anywhere you want. So an expensive apt. may not work, but an affordable one that costs the same as on campus housing w/meal plan would be covered.

My D lived in Hill freshman year, sorority sophomore year and apt. junior and senior. And she used FA to cover costs. Worked out better to live in the sorority and apt, than it did on campus. All depends on how much you eat and pay for utilities etc.

thank you all :)
