Housing application--submit now or no?

University of Florida is a safety school for me, I’ll be honest about that. I’m not too sure how concerned I should be about submitting the housing application and paying the housing application fee.

I saw that they don’t guarantee housing for students–would I be at risk to not get a dorm on campus if I don’t submit the housing application soon?

I’m from the pacific northwest, so if I do end up going to UF, I’d need to have a dorm with air conditioning–do these go quickly, or no? I have friends at UF, but I’d rather not have to rely on them for a place to sleep, if UF really doesn’t guarantee everyone housing as the email said.

Does UF have dorms without A/C??? That’s crazy!

I think my friend mentioned that a few of the dorms don’t have AC at UF.

All dorms now have AC at UF.

If there is any chance you would attend UF, then suggest you submit the housing app. Not sure if it changed but it used to be $25.00. You pick housing based on when you apply. Think of it as insurance.

I completely agree with 2kidzmom. Unless spending the $25 will create a hardship for you, I would recommend doing it. You will be very glad you did if you end up attending UF!

You should definitely decide immediately if you want an UF-owned dorm or private dorm and then submit your paperwork. I put my housing app late October (I think the week before Halloween) and still got stuck in a “forced triple” which is basically a double room with three people stuck in it. It’s smaller than my room was in high school, and I have to share it with two other people. It’s crazy small. At UF there are dorm options that are owned by UF (Broward, Beaty, Lakeside, etc) and options that are privately owned ones (Windsor Hall, Ivy, etc) and all the dorms fill up really quickly. In the UF owned dorms, you don’t know dorm you’ll get or what size when you send in your housing app, and when you chose your room it goes based on when you paid for the housing app. So basically all you have is a guarantee you’ll get a room somewhere. Personally I’d get the private dorms just so that you don’t get stuck in a double room with three people in it for your entire freshman year.

Good luck!
