Housing Application

gwsenior - would you mind offering some more info on the housing application. I see that they want housing preferences, but does that mean the dorm AND the room model/tier? I guess I should sit and look over the floor plans a little closer then.

You only have to rank your preferences of which dorm you want to live in, and how many people you want to live with. I haven’t had to fill out the housing request in two years since I live off campus, so hopefully one of the current freshmen who post on this site can provide a bit more insight into how it all works now.

waveswatcher…where did you find the housing application?

THX…

Daily - go to the GW Housing Programs Web Portal at https://gwhousing.gwu.edu/index.asp</a> and log in with your NetID. There you will find an application from previous years and it tells you how to fill out yours. The only thing is that the print is really small in some palces and that’s why I’m alittle confused about what they want exactly. But I guess when I get on the site tomorrow I’ll just follow the directions. Hope this helps!

waveswatcher, thank you for the website… however, when i enter my ID, the web said

"Access Denied!
You don’t have permission to log in or you have entered an invalid user name and/or password. "…

(oops…)

I recall it being confusing last year - they didn’t specifically ask for which dorms you wanted to be in, but which special interest group, which was located in a specific dorm. For example, the lower half of Thurston was “Politics and something” and the upper half was “Policy and something else”, so you didn’t specify a dorm but the special interest (which is effectively the same thing as specifying the dorm). I also recall D saying that it seemed anyone who had Somers as one of their choices ended up there - so don’t list it if you wouldn’t be happy on the Vern.

It seems that they are requesting as many preferences as there are freshman dorms, including the Vern dorms. How do you register all the required preferences w/o listing the Vern dorms. I am not interested in living at the Vern at all.

Daily - I do not have the number, but I know if you look on the gwired site that they list a number for technical help. You actually get a real live person to walk you thru your problems.

Sorry, not sure. I’m old, my memory can be fuzzy, but I don’t think there were that many choices on the Vern last year, possibly only Somers. I see now they have Hensley, Clark, and Merriweather listed as first-year halls. Maybe that is due to the downsizing of Thurston?

Something interesting happended with my application. After I did all the screeens, I was supposed to get a time stamp saying that the application had been received. When I didn’t get one, I tried the application again, still no time stamp. So I called housing just to make sure they had gotten my application, and they had but… when they reviewed my preferences, none of them were in the order I had put them in on the screen!!! I had them change my preferences on their screen and I got the name of the guy that did it in the department. Just a word of caution!

was there even a place to say what size room you prefer? the application seemed way too short for me!

Did you guys put a roommate down? Can that be added later do you think- meaning can you log back in to make changes? Waves- if so, were your preferences what you originally put down? Someone earlier posted that you can’t choose room size or floor, is this correct?

If you guys are confused/having problems with the application, I’d strongly suggest calling GW Housing. As long as you’re nice (and please, please be nice; they are just trying to do their jobs and problems with the application aren’t their fault), you can be honest with them and say something like “I really want to live in X dorm” or “I really want a single,” and they can give you advice about the best way to fill it out.

I thought we could keep editing our prefrences until May or something according to the email they sent out?

Is housing on a first come first served basis then? I know they give EDers priority but if for example an ED student submits the housing app earlier than anotehr ED student, does this mean the 1st ED student who submitted the app has a higher chance of getting the dorm he/she wants?

ahh so confused i’m just starting the app and i don’t want to submit until im completely sure…

the way housing is assigned is randomized. like, they’ll take the EDI kids, put them in some random order, and assign their rooms. Then take the EDII kids, and so on until the RD kids.

nbg - I didn’t put down my room, roommate (bc I don’t know anyone yet) or floor plan on the application. They only asked me for the building that I preferred and in what order. I think that once you are assigned a building/room, you can use the site to see what your floor plan looks like so the housing dept. doesn’t have to take a million phone calls. I don’t think that you ever get to choose that stuff. I could be wrong…

P.S. I also didn’t see a place on the application that asked if you wanted to live in a double, triple or quad. I don’t want to live in a quad, so I don’t know what you do if they assign one to you. I would hate to think that if you turned down your first assignment then you get whatever they have left.

did anyone get a conformation email or anything

I did my application the first day and I have not received any confirmation, so I printed out my app for some sort of verification and am hoping for the best!
