Ok, so I am currently a freshman and I'm trying to figure out housing for next year. I had no idea people started looking so early...

anyway, i'm just not sure if i want to spend another year in the dorms or move into a house. but i've got a few concerns. first off, i know the three people i'd want to live with, however i've known them for merely a month and a half and who knows if we'll still be close come the end of the year? or semester even....

and if i were to live in the dorms, the only dorm i would consider is north quad. with the global scholars program and International Impact, does anyone know the likelihood of getting into NQ? i will be attending the open houses that puts your name on a priority list.

also, i've heard with grocery shopping and what not, living off campus isn't THAT much cheaper than living in the dorm. but i could be wrong. i guess it depends

so yeah.... i can't decide! help anyone?

(oh, and if you were to estimate, what percentage of sophomores live in dorms?)

What you said about those 3 people could apply as easily in the dorms next year. You room with someone and maybe don’t like them. At least in a house you get your own room. Groceries are cheaper than you think. You can almost fine dine for the same cost as cafeteria, or stick with ramen noodles. Or you can get the dorm food and it will still be cheaper living in a house. Even a single apartment at 12 month lease runs almost the same cost as 8 month double dorm.

The downside other than losing those programs you’re interested in is if any of them bail on you, you will have to replace them or pay their rent. I think it’s roughly half of sophomores live in the dorms.

my soph year in the dorms was awesome. I had a great time but I kinda got lucky about the people who lived around me i guess. Easiest best year in college for me tho…
yeah living off campus is not that much cheaper depending on ur location and place… maybe it is compared to NQ tho. I think NQ is more expensive right?

600 per month *12=7200 already. w/out food and other inherent expenses with living in a house.

Stockwell is a very nice dorm on The Hill, near Central Campus, for sophomores only. That might be a good option if you want to stay in a dorm. My son is currently a freshman and just signed a least with five friends for a house next year. I think they might be in over their heads, but they want to move off campus next year.
