Can someone give me the lowdown? Is it first come first served?

Housing assignment priority is based on the credit hours you have. So the more credit hours, the more chance you'll have in getting the dorm you want.

This should explain it for you:
Georgia Tech Housing: Assignments

oh that stinks...do you think that means I won't be getting North avenue or undergraduate living center?

Right now I have 7 credits, this semester will put me at 22, and I could do summer school (don't know if those would even be counted in time) and everyone else will probably wind up having ~30 after this semester.

That doesn't show the system they use for priority of returning students.

Only 7 credits from fall semester? Do you have any transfer/AP credit (those count)? Otherwise, spring semester does NOT count in housing. It counts what you have RECEIVED by the time you apply (you apply in March).

You're not going to get ULC (it's only juniors/seniors/athletes). North Ave is pretty big so you'll probably get in there. Maybe. Who knows.

yea only 7, and I got those in the summer..no ap

as long as I get an apartment besides woodruff I'd be happy..

As I understand it, Housing rewards how long you've actually been at Georgia Tech. Credit hours are used to rank students within years.

I came in with junior class standing, but in Spring of my freshman year, Housing told me that I would be a "second year" for their purposes.

If you really want an apartment but don't have the seniority, then opt for random roommates. Housing satisfies roommate preferences before building preferences. If you list no people you want to room with, then they go straight to your building preferences.

I know several second-years who did this and got West Campus apartments. Some of my friends thought they would be exempt from this and ended up getting North Avenue, which wasn't even on their list.
