Housing at Penn

quadquadquadquad.

But in general, your Ptown toolbag friend is right in that Penn's housing ain't that great. Except of course for Quad.

Just putting it out there that not being in the quad doesn't mean you'll have a miserable freshman year. I know quite a few people in the quad who aren't happy there and it's not as "social" as they thought it would be.

I'm in KCECH and am loving it. My floor's incredibly close and we have a ton of fun/go out (we're not anti-social ::rolls eyes). Sink, pretty large room, close to classes, own dining hall...

I haven't met a single person here who didn't apply to the quad, so we are all, in essence, quad rejects...

ANYWAY, point is.. if you don't get into the quad, KCECH'll be fine.

If you request Hill, you're a masochist.

i definitely listed hill as my first two choices and have yet to regret it...it's not the best place the first few weeks of school when it's sweltering hot, but i have friends thinking of transferring out of the quad and KCEH into hill b/c the social atmosphere is so much better...hill itself sucks, but the people make the dorm, and i have definitely met my closest friends here :)
plus, it's nice to not have to walk around campus trying to find food when it's freezing cold and rainy outside :p

Someone said African Americans prefer Dubois.

Why?

well its population is mostly african americans, so i guess theres a strong sense of community there? i know a girl there, and I think they also have all sorts of black events and stuff, like movie screenings of famous movies about race relations and stuff.

What are the people like in Hill?

Why do you guys say it is like hell? I mean, how much of the year is it hot? Once the cold comes, do you need the A/C? And plus, what's nicer than having a dining hall in your building?

Also, I am not sure if I read right, but KC has a dining hall too?

Some people do place a high value on the dining hall being in their dorm. You will be okay no matter where you get housing.....some kids arrive on campus knowing no other soul......many social friendships are formed during the first semester/year. Many kids find that they continue these friendships during their 4 undergrad years. Don't worry about being assigned to Hill if that is where you end up. I have friends who lived in Hill their first year, they liked it, they didn't hate it. They didn't really care that they weren't assigned to the Quad. People are loyal to their current housing situation many times.

yeah i think what you said is true. however, from my perspective, having a nice huge air conditioned room in the quad, hill seems like hell. once again, dont take my words as dogma, this is simply a quad resident's perspective:

1) quad = beautiful, stereotypical ivy league architecture
hill = nasty square building
2) when ive been to hill, the hall lights are always dim, theres like trash on the floor, and the halls themselves are narrow. it just seems kinda dismal to me.
3) the rooms are tiny, and when its hot here, its sweltering inside hill.

however, i know lots of ppl in hill who really love it (or they claim to). i can def see how they have a better sense of community than the quad, because in hill, there are 5 big floors with like 100 rooms all part of the same square hall, whereas the quad is broken up into dozens of individual buildings, so each building is like its own entity. that is probably one big thing that hill has over us.

Hey, I live in Hill this year and I decided to offer some insight on living here.

In short, I love it. The people in my hall are great, and I know everyone in my area and most of the people on my floor. From what I hear, our hall is one of the more fun/social halls in Hill - for some reason, I don't know why, we all just love to party and be social. You can get unlucky, as well; a girl I know says that her floor is boring and that everybody just studies, so every night she comes here to hang out with us. I suppose that this will be found regardless of where you live. Some areas of dorms are louder and more social, others are quieter and more study-oriented.

As far as the building itself, I have certainly seen better, although it really isn't as bad as everyone says it is. Yes, it is old and the rooms are small (and hot when its warm out), but that fact just forces everyone out of their rooms and into the lounges. There are always people in our lounges... even at 4 in the morning there are probably people there talking. It is also great to have a cafeteria in the building; we don't have to walk anywhere to get food, although sometimes we do. Overall, the quality of the food is pretty good - I expected worse. From what I've heard, Hill is one of the more social places on campus.

In retrospect, I really do love Hill, the people in particular. If I could have changed one thing with my housing app (I wanted to be in the Quad), I would put a single in Hill as my first choice. Some of the singles here are pretty big, and I think that I would enjoy living with more privacy from my roommate. Take the generalizations about Hill with a grain of salt, as I am much happier here than many of my friends in the Quad are.

Can Someone Please Post Picks Of The Dorms

oh, surfbum brought up a good point: the cafeteria in hill is really convenient for those guys. the cafeteria for the quad is 1920 commons, which is like a two block walk. though that sounds like nothing, thats probably one of my longer walks during the day.

and like i said, Hill does have a more connected hall than Quad.

Still.......the Quad = one of my favorite aspects of college. But to each his own.

seriously guys, i've posted once and i will again :)
hill is not a dorm that you're going to fall in love with at first sight, but you definitely grow to love it...i know people--no joke--who want to transfer out of the quad into hill b/c the social life there is pretty horrible; yes, the rooms are tiny, but seriously, how many hours a day are you in your room and not sleeping? most ppl study/chill in the lounge and read in teh library and have classes/clubs they're in so that they're really only in their rooms a few hours a day, and that, too, to sleep...as for dim lighting, lamps are not that expensive...
being from louisiana, AC was originally a must for me, but you deal with it for about 3-4 weeks max using a fan and leaving your window open...but then it's not a problem at all...
seriously consider hill when you're applying for housing...it's really a lot better than so many ppl claim it is...even if you're not an oddball who lists hill as your 1st and 2nd choices (like me! :p), you grow to love it and get the true freshman dorm experience, as far as social life/friends/meeting ppl goes...and it's nice to know that there's always someone outside at 3 in the morning willing to help you with calculus homework :)

K, now hill sounds cool. (calculus-3am----help-----finally!...lol) It has definately earned a spot on my list, but not before the Quad and KC.

man high rises and stouffer/mayer are wayyyy too antisocial (too many upperclassmen who dont want to talk to you)

Just to clarify, which ones are the quad ones again?

Ware/Fisher/Riepe are quad houses.

diddo on Hazmat. You would have to literally be dead to not make friends here...but, then again...even the corpses at the medical labs could even grab a friend/date or two around this campus, so there's nothing to worry about!

what about the....um....socially inexperienced people who have 800's across the board, a 4.0, 5's on 9 AP's, and have never watched TV or had a date. Do they do ok? Do any even stray onto campus in the first place?

Not that i qualify for the first part, or quite live so poorly as to qualify for the second, but i'm curious anyhow ;)

As for the first part, a lot of students here at Penn come from very prestigious private schools and have lived a very "sheltered life", but learn to open up to people after a little while. As for the second part, most students at Penn made the same grades as you (certainly not me, but a lot of OTHER students). Trust me, it's impossible not to make friends here. Even if you want to remain socially inept, or shy, well too bad. You're going to make friends whether you want to or not. If you don't approach them, trust me, they will soon approach you (but, in a good way)! :)
