First of all, I’m so flippin’ shocked and delighted that I got these responses; they were very reassuring, informative, and surprisingly numerous. So thank you to all.

If you saw my room in the layout, it really does make me think it’s a two-room double (as interesteddad believes) which WOULD be a sweet deal. I really don’t mind a “cove-mate” much (at my previous school, three other girls and I shared a suite and referred to each other as “suite-mates”). I am just sick of sharing a bedroom since I relish solitude and strongly dislike knowing who my roommate is sleeping with.

@claralucia - Thank you so much for the offer! Oh, and as if we were separated at birth, I’m also a bit flustered at the idea of living in “the party dorm”. But I hope that the Swarthmore stereotype holds true and that “partying” in Swatspeak is playing Twister at one in the morning on a Friday night. If so, let the tame games begin.

When I posted the question, I was studying the floor plans and trying to figure out what you were looking at. In the meantime, I got it, and then Claralucia explained it perfectly.

Maybe we should unofficially, privately rename Willets. In keeping with the other initial dorms (AP, DK), CC might fit. At this point I think nearly every poster with a kid who went/goes to Swat has done some Willets time.

^Let’s come back to that point in four years! I know I, personally, have a high chance of choosing ML over Willets next year as a sophomore if it comes to that. Strath vs. Willets would be more difficult, but I click well with ML culture (which I encountered at RTT and have since found little reason to revise my opinion of).

Keilexandra - good for you - my son is a rising Junior who opted to stay in ML (blocking) this year (after spending sophomore year there). He loves the culture.

But I’m one of those exception alums and parents (now of 2 current students) on CC with no Willets exposure (no. 2 son starts this year with a Parrish assignment - he is very happy - he loved visiting his brother who spent Freshman year in Parrish).

Wharton’s amaaaazing! It was my freshman dorm and as excited I am about Mertz for my senior year, Wharton will always have a very special place in my heart. It’s generally regarded as the best dorm (ideally located, nice rooms, social but not insane, pretty courtyard, etc), and it’s a great place for freshmen. If you have more specific questions I can answer them, but Wharton’s a great place to be. :]

pmurray62-Bonanza in getting placed in Wharton as a freshman. My son lived in a single junior and senior years in Wharton. It’s pretty much considered the best dorm on campus because of location, social life, rooms. You’d be lucky to be back in Wharton again before senior year. Is there anything in particular you’d like to know about it?

@1000Bpm - No problem! Really, your dorm experience is what you make of it. And while there are plenty who go quite beyond the “Twister” stereotype, it’s also pretty easy to find people whose party style matches yours. Also, for what it’s worth, several of last year’s transfers got obscenely good housing numbers this time around. See you at orientation!

Resurrecting this thread; what is the “personality” of David Kemp? What are the advantages and disadvantages of living there? Does it have A/C? And how close will it be to the construction project (hotel, store, conference center) Swat will start in the fall? Will Swat have to do anything creative this year with housing (ie, did they overenroll and will they have to put kids in converted lounges or anything like that?)

Appreciate those Quaker values. Has anyone read July’s “Swarthmore Bulletin?” No, this isn’t a dream–D really IS matriculating into this fantabulous school! She’s going to be in Hallowell (ryhmes with her mom’s maiden name, “Hanowell”). lol :)

D is a rising senior and will live off-campus with friends next year. Was in ML her freshman year - absolutely LOVED it - a real community, very tight all year which was great for freshmen. Sophomore year in Parrish and she found its central location difficult. Little privacy as all manner of acquaintances stopped by at all hours on their way to/from McCabe, Sharples, dorms, classes, Olde Club, etc. For a freshman without an established friend set, Parrish would probably be better. S lived in Willets for 2 years, then off-campus. 'Nuff said…

ProxyGC: None of the dorms have air conditioning. David Kemp will be closer to where the construction will be (David Kemp and Alice Paul are closer to the train station than all the other buildings on campus), but I don’t think it’ll be a problem because the construction will be on the other side of the train tracks, off campus. I’ve never lived in DK but people seem to like it – it’s clean, new, and quite stylish, and students rush to claim a room in DK during the housing lottery. It doesn’t seem to have that much of a personality yet, but I think the whole “personality” thing doesn’t really mean much. I doubt that Swarthmore will have to do anything drastic like put students into converted lounges.
