I've done searches but can't seem to find any threads dedicated to explaining how the lottery system works to rising sophomores. If the God of Housing as well as other current students could help out, I'm sure this thread will also be useful for other rising sophs going through this for the first time.

First is a question on how the process works - with 2 lottery numbers such as 10/1000 and 20/2000, who chooses first? Do all 30's choose first, then the 20's, then the 10's? How does the 4 digit number work?

Based on the historical data, the cutoff for Wien singles for the last two years were 10/2942 and 10/2016, while the cutoff for Schapiro singles was 10/1093. How were sophomores able to get into these singles with such poor lottery numbers? I'm guessing this has something to do with the selection priority I just asked about.

Finally, a situation-specific question: I have the option of trying for EC with seniors and juniors (sharing the double with another soph). However, my highest priority is getting a single (I have really odd sleeping habits.) If I do the online registration in the group of 5 or 6 for EC, but end up with a great lottery number and try for a single, I don't want to screw the rest of the group over. I read that the whole group will have to drop down to general selection if someone drops out - is it possible to substitute someone else in and still try for the EC suite?

Priorities are as follows:
1. Single on campus (Furnald is the only one I know of, no LLC please)
2. Single off campus but not as far as 47C or Plimpton (I can think of Schapiro, Wien, River, please list others I've missed which are "accessible" to sophomores)
3. EC suite in a double

Given this list of priorities, how do I optimize my actions so as to achieve the highest possible value and avoid screwing others over?

For the LLC, I read that selection order is determined by your class year (senior > junior > soph) but can’t seem to find the link now. If that’s so, won’t all the singles be gone by the time it’s our turn to pick?

Also, doesn’t registering for the LLC mean that you won’t be assigned a lottery number at all?

^but very few juniors and practically no seniors self-select into the LLC, also sophomores + juniors + seniors in the LLC < number of singles. So all sophs who get into the llc get singles.

You get a lottery number within the LLC, good number = good single, bad number = small single.

fundamental - there are 4 doubles in the LLC that you could get as a 2nd year (they are in 9A and 9C in both H and W that are not given to first years). i think they take like 60 2nd years, so that means the chance of getting a single is 52/60. i got a single in the LLC soph year. it is the most assured way of getting a single (you need too low of a lot number to get one in furnald).

you have to be selected to the LLC first at which point you are given an lottery number (all students at CU are given a lot number even if they end up doing something different, it just means you don’t pick). the difference is that if you are accepted to the LLC it is like Early Decision, you promise you’ll go live there and during selection you can only choose an LLC room.

if you are not accepted into the LLC then you are use the lottery number for general selection. i forget if this means you have time to sign up as a suite or not. though i assume as much.
