Housing for Junior Year

Does anyone know how the lottery system works for rising juniors for on campus housing? DOes the number we get in the lottery determine if you can stay on campus at all or can you get around it if someone pulls you in? Also, how hard is it to get into Commons/Courtyards. Is it easier to apply by yourself or with a roommate or can you do both?

DS is going through this right now, if I understand him correctly his group has decided to “play the system” They are all placing their names in, but in different scenarios, 4 and 2 to cover all bases. I.E. they will pull from the best of the numbers…this is for commons. They may land up with 2 4 or 4 2, or even a 4, 2, and 2. They will take the highest ones out of their group and go from there to design their room break down.

As far as I understand it the lottery system works against rising juniors for the traditional dorms. Remember they guarantee housing for the 1st 2 yrs, which leaves little room for the upper classes.
