Housing: CHARMS or Special Interest

I don't really know much about each of the special interest houses, except that apparently the nice new dorms are special interest - I don't remember which ones.

But how cool does CHARMS sound? Well, actually, it just sounds like a shady dating service, but y'know, in a "hella" fun way.

It does sound hella fun. It's just like a kind of chat room, right?

I'm applying for special interest. My Admissions Ambassador recommended it highly.

The CHARMS thing sounds excellent though, what a brilliant idea

could anybody explain what "special interest" actually means?

Special interest housing is a group of programs where students with similar interests live together. The following site will give you a list and description of the posibilities: http://www.georgetown.edu/student-affairs/reslife/sih.html What's good about SIH is that you know what dorm you'll be in, and some dorms are definitely better than others like the Southwest Quad.

I already applied and got into Justice in Action SIH.

charms is awesome.....go for it...i tried and found my roomie through charms..on the other hand i only found out i got into special interest housing AFTER i chose my roommate through charms, so i got the best of both worlds :)

what is charms?

Charms is a system that Georgetown uses to help students find roommates. You input info about your sleeping preferences, whether or not you want to share items, etc, etc. and the computer matches you with other admitted students. you can then talk to them online and choose your own roommate. Its a really good idea, except you can't use it if you want to do special interest housing. But then again, special interest housing has the advantage that you know which dorm you'll be in.

Can freshmen apply for all special-interest housing??

I believe freshmen can apply to all except for Global Living Community.

For the incoming freshman (class of 2009), we get our housing stuff in the summer, right? So how do we apply for the special housing interest? Or for CHARMS?

You'll get your info package shortly after the class of 2009 has been chosen (May 1). You'll get info about the housing and about Charms which will begin sometime in June/July. If you want to apply for Special interest housing now, click on the link I posted above and apply early. I appled to Justice in Action, and I have been accepted, even though I haven't even gotten my info package yet!

How does the whole CHARMS thing work? Do you fill out a questionairre or something? What are some of the criteria?

Yeah, you fill out a questionaire, and then the system lists your matches. You can chat with them. The questions range from what time you go to bed, when you get up, etc. to whehter you like sharing small items, large items, etc.

Either way, the CHARMS way is a better method of choosing roommates than by being assigned.

wow, that sounds really great.

Does anyone know if there is a special interest housing located in Harbin?

calidan, yes there is.
its called Living Well, and its loads of fun. Its located on the second floor of Harbin, which undoubtedly is the best freshman dorm. I am currently in this program.
btw, for all who don't know, CHARMS is an acronym for "Campus Housing Assisgnment Roommate Matching Syster"
Gtown comes up with the best acronyms ever!

Like "GERMS"... LOL.

And Living Well is the kind of "clean living" program, if you will?

yes, the clean living program. hehe, whats your SN btw?
