Can anybody please suggest the housing options for a student from India, who got accepted into NCSU Engineering in the Early application (Fall 2015, Freshman). Wanted to apply for housing but does not know which Halls are better. The Housing site of NCSU does not give about the cons of any Halls. For them every Hall is good. Please suggest ways to pick up a room? whether suite type or hall type rooms are better, what is the party scene and how disturbing it will be on weekends? He applied for Honors program. If selected into Honors, is it better to opt for Honors Halls?
For an engineering student, I would suggest the Engineering Village. My son is in his second year there and has enjoyed it. It is located in Metcalf hall.
What you really need to do is apply for housing now. No deposit is required, and the process is completely separate from enrollment. The reason to apply now is that the whole process is first come, first served. A couple years ago, you could even change which dorm you wanted to live in and your place in line did not change. I could not find that one the website, so maybe someone here can confirm if that is still the policy.
My daughter lives in an Honors dorm. I do remember that she had to apply for housing before she was accepted to Honors. She had to choose 3 dorms. Once she was accepted into Honors, she was able to change her housing choice to Honors and got a room there. Many of the students in the Honors Program are engineering majors. Some live in Honors housing and some live in the Engineering Village. My daughter really enjoys living in the Honors dorm. She says that it’s a “dry” dorm. Honors students who want to party go elsewhere to do so, and the Honors dorms are pretty quiet overall. They do have social activities for the students though, and a dining hall is right next door. Another option for your son is the Global Village where international students are paired with U.S. students: http://housing.ncsu.edu/global-village
More information about what your son wants could help us give you advice. Does he want a quiet dorm or a ‘party’ dorm? There are probably pros and cons to each dorm and village.
@needavacation - good point about the “dry” dorms. There are a few that are not, and that is worth knowing.
I do want to add, for the benefit of an international student, that “dry” means no alcohol allowed even for students of legal drinking age. Just want to avoid a language issue because I have seen this same term cause confusion during campus tours.
@Decidesomehow, @Needavacation - Thank you for your advice. He is more oriented into academics but also a social person. “Dry” is most preferred. He likes Football (Soccer), Painting and wants to learn singing. Since he is the only person from the family staying in US for the education, the family is a bit concerned.
