Housing choices

My freshman son is trying to make his housing choice for next year. I know some of the dorms have been discussed before, but we haven't read anything about Johnstone. Also, how are the Shoeboxes as compared to Byrnes & Mauldin?

I finished in '78. I would not live in Johnstone. I did so for two years. The Shoeboxes were all women when I was there, but are certainly no longer. Byrnes and Mauldin are high rises. If I had to pick I would choose the Shoeboxes--closer to sporting events and more intimate than the high rises. I lived in Lever which is next to Byrnes and Mauldin and likewise is a highrise. My son is still trying to decide where he wants to go. If he goes to Clemson, and he may well, he hopes to either be in the honors dorm or the Shoeboxes. Unless Johnstone has changed mightily, it is a thin walled area of noise with metal walls. Most of it has been torn down. Good luck.

I could be wrong but isn't Johstone the last dorm standing that hasn't been substantially redone (ie torn down & rebuilt)? I thought I read somewhere that they plan to tear it down & rebuild it in the near future - but if it's a choice for next year, then it won't be torn down next year I guess.
I hear nothing but bad things about Shoeboxes, the high rises are the newer & nicer dorms, as is Holmes, the Honors dorms where DS resides. He definitely like sthe suite set up.

Johnstone is just a small remnant of its former inglorious self. The vast majority of it was torn down years ago. The high rises are not new. They are well over 30 years old. I can't vouch for the current quality of the Shoeboxes. Holmes is very nice and where my son will be if space is available and he attends. It is a nice plus for being in the Honors College.

Palmettoman, thanks for the updated info re dorms. I had no idea how old the high rises are, and wasn't sure of the exact state of Johnstone. As of 2 years ago, the Shoeboxes were a definite no. They could have been updated in that time frame but I honestly don't know.

My freshman daughter currently lives in Johnstone (against our advise). She wanted a coed dorm. It's absolutely filthy - you have to see it to believe it.
