Hi all,
I have a problem. I didn’t know about the whole “applying to housing early to get your preference” thing. So, as implied, I haven’t done my housing application. I know that if I were to submit my application right now, though, I would likely get assigned to Jester, and that is not at all what I want (I know getting what I want is unreasonable to expect at this point). I’ve heard the horror stories about Jester and I know I wouldn’t fit it in there at all. However, my preferred roommate, one of my high school friends, submitted his application in December along with his preferred dorms (in order: Blanton, Whittis Court, Andrews, Carothers, Moore Hill) and this brings up a question: if we were to mutually agree to be roommates and set the same preferences for dorms, would the housing staff select our dorm based on his timeline or based on mine? I do understand that most of those dorms are for Honors students but we are keeping our fingers crossed, as we are both extremely nerdy and would likely fit in well at the quad. Thanks for all the help.
I’ve also looked into West Campus apartments, but would like to avoid living off campus as a freshman due to the stigma behind living on campus.
If it helps: I am incoming freshman with an intended major of Cello Performance, and he is an incoming freshman, as well, with an undecided major.
Get your application in today!! Don't guess, get it in. It's 50 bucks, non refundable but necessary for any chances you have.
Jester can be bad but Jester can also be great. Many people like and want Jester. Compare East vs West maybe.
I believe the your friends application date will be used. (My son tried the same thing with someone else, because my son had his app submitted in August.). Regardless, get you app in TODAY.
I'm not sure if you can put any of the Honors dorms down as preference . I may be wrong, but I think there is a system trigger based on Honors acceptance. IF it allows you to do so, then do so just like your friend. If not, do it in your own preference. I have a link below you should read. Make sure you share each others EID's etc so you can both match your roommate preference. If the Honors dorms don't get filled with Honor students, then you may be able to room together. If not, keep checking back, even when school starts. Things change. People graduate in December, or drop out/leave whenever.
I don’t like the comment about nerdy…there are some pretty great students, smart, athletic, engaging, type A’s, leaders etc throughout the Honors dorm and all of UT for that matter. When you get to college, do yourself a favor and shed those thoughts.
Your West campus statement doesn’t make much sense. Where’s the stigma? West campus or on UT Campus. You’re thinking to much of what others think. Do what’s best for you. It’s your life. It’s our college experience.
It would also be wise to call the UT Austin Division of Housing and Food services. They are very helpful

Congrats and Good Luck, and get your housing app in today.
I will add- is your friend already in an honors program? That could be a factor.
Also- when you finally get offered a contract (hopefully)- make sure you & your friend match everything (including order & bathroom preference) so, obviously your friend will need to go back into his portal and update his application to include you.
Thanks so much everybody! I submitted my application, and my friends also going to UT told me that I’ll likely get a contract after March 11th, if at all. Once I get it, I’ll match everything with him. The main point I’m making is I’d like to live on campus with him. Thanks again!
