How does housing work during summer sessions and Co-op? It's my understanding from the information posted on the NEU Housing website that in between Spring/Summer I/Summer II/Fall semesters is an intercession period in which all students are required to vacate their assigned housing. Are there opportunities to move students' belongings to their new assignments before the intercession period?

Also, when a student is on co-op and is living on campus, what are they supposed to do during this intercession period when they have nowhere to live?

The information provided on the housing website is very unclear and troubling. Does any current upperclassman student have any experience with dealing with this or any information to correct my assumption?

If you will be on campus for the following period, you’ll either leave all of your stuff (same dorm) or work out a moving day with your new RD (different dorm). The “vacate” time is winter break (only for first year students, who aren’t allowed to stay- but their stuff is) or if you are moving out of a dorm but not into a new one.

The main time it becomes a problem is if someone moves out of a dorm Summer 2 and into an off-campus apartment for Fall. There is usually a 2 week gap between the two times where students have to figure out what to do, although everyone I’ve known eventually got it worked out.

So, is it possible then to live in the same on campus apartment assignment from SI-SII-Fall-Spring of the same year?

I still don’t understand what’s supposed to happen in between move-out and move-in days between semesters. Even if you can move all your stuff beforehand, don’t the buildings close? Sorry, I’m just really confused about the logistics.

You’re generally assigned the same dorm for Fall & Spring semesters, but as far as I know, they don’t let you stay in that same room over summer sessions.

The buildings do “close” between sessions, but the RDs are generally flexible and will help with the logistics of moving.

I moved into apartments pretty early on so never did the summer session move out/move in, but people find a way to make it work. We all have to deal with move out/in dates. It’s definitely not something to worry too much about.

You definitely can stay in the same room for summers. I did it after my 2nd year in WVF. Plenty (most) people moved out, but I just stuck around in the same room.

However NOT all buildings remain open for the summer semesters, because there are less people who want to live on campus. So if you do live in a building that closes, you’ll have to move to a different building. But that’s just a matter of figuring out a day to move your stuff.

After your first year (when you have to leave), there is nothing physically preventing you from being in your dorm in between sessions if you will be living there for the next session too. I’ve been on campus during winter break. The building is practically empty, but it’s fine. During the gap between spring and summer I, or summer I and summer II, you seriously barely notice any change. SO many students are on co-op that for me, I hardly noticed classes ended and began again- I just kept working and coming home like normal.

Most people wouldn’t live in the same place Summer II to Fall, because you select your housing for each year STARTING with Fall. So the selection process for Summer II versus Fall would be in an entirely different round of picking. I’ve never heard of someone picking their EXACT same room again, although I guess it’s not impossible. Normally though, like I said, you’d just work out a moving date with your RD. But other than maybe having to take an evening to haul your stuff across campus without a bin (because it’s not officially “move in” time yet), you’ll barely notice it.

“Move-out” and “move-in” days are ONLY for people moving off campus/going home or moving back on campus after living off/returning from home. Then they have these very strict days and times where you have to be there or you have to check out and leave by.

There will be a gap between the “move-out” day for (for example) Spring and the “move-in” day for Summer I. The theory is that the building people need time to repaint, cleanup after people who left, or do other random things… But if you are staying in the same room, these dates don’t affect you AT ALL. You’ll just see people repainting the walls, that’s it.

If you are staying on campus but moving to a different room/building, your RD will help you figure out a day and time to move your things that will likely be towards your old building’s “move-out” date, although it could be anywhere in between the two. It depends on if your old building is legit closing for good during the summer (aka turning all of the air conditioning off and no one is allowed to live there). But there WILL NOT BE A DIFFERENCE between YOUR “move-in” and “move-out”. They will be the same time, arranged by your RD.
